POSITION OVERVIEW
The Senior Commercial Relationship Specialist is a senior-level relationship management and business development role within the Commercial Banking Group. This position manages a portfolio of assigned commercial, nonprofit, and business banking relationships and serves as the primary relationship manager for less complex client portfolios. The role is responsible for relationship growth, client retention, portfolio management, and new business development through proactive client engagement, consultative sales, and community involvement.
Working independently and exercising sound judgment, the Senior Commercial Relationship Specialist analyzes client needs, develops relationship strategies, identifies opportunities, and coordinates internal resources to deliver integrated banking solutions. The position partners closely with Relationship Managers, Client & Treasury Managers, Treasury Management Advisors, Credit, and other business partners to support client success, portfolio growth, and achievement of Commercial Banking Group objectives.
This role is considered a developmental pathway to a Client & Treasury Manager or Relationship Manager position and is expected to demonstrate increasing leadership in portfolio management, client relationship ownership, business development, and sales execution.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Commercial Client Portfolio Management
- Manage a portfolio of assigned commercial, nonprofit, and business banking relationships.
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for assigned client relationships and maintain accountability for client retention, relationship growth, and overall portfolio performance.
- Develop and execute relationship growth strategies designed to expand client engagement and utilization of Bank products and services.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of client business operations, financial objectives, and banking needs to identify opportunities and risks.
- Exercise independent judgment in managing client relationships, evaluating client needs, and recommending appropriate banking solutions.
Business Development & Revenue Growth
- Generate new business opportunities through prospecting, referral development, centers of influence, community involvement, and existing client relationships.
- Maintain responsibility for achieving assigned production, portfolio growth, and relationship development objectives.
- Identify opportunities to expand client relationships through credit, deposit, treasury management, and other banking solutions.
- Represent the Bank in the marketplace through business development, networking, and community engagement activities that support client acquisition and market growth.
Client Relationship Leadership
- Lead client relationship discussions, relationship reviews, and solution-oriented conversations for assigned relationships.
- Develop trusted advisor relationships with clients by providing consultative guidance aligned with client financial and business objectives.
- Coordinate internal resources and subject matter experts to deliver integrated banking solutions and a consistent client experience.
- Maintain ownership of client relationships while ensuring timely resolution of service, operational, and product-related matters.
Portfolio Analysis & Risk Management
- Analyze financial information, relationship performance, and portfolio trends to support relationship strategy and portfolio management decisions.
- Monitor assigned relationships for emerging risks, opportunities, policy compliance, and overall relationship health.
- Develop recommendations regarding relationship strategy, product utilization, and portfolio optimization.
- Exercise independent judgment in identifying, evaluating, and escalating client, operational, credit, or compliance risks.
Solution Development & Sales Leadership
- Lead the development of relationship strategies, client proposals, presentations, and solution recommendations.
- Partner with Relationship Managers, Client & Treasury Managers, Treasury Management Advisors, Credit, and other internal stakeholders to structure and deliver appropriate banking solutions.
- Contribute expertise and relationship insights to internal sales planning, opportunity strategy, and business development initiatives.
- Drive coordinated sales efforts that support client growth, portfolio expansion, and achievement of Commercial Banking Group objectives.
Leadership & Strategic Collaboration
- Serve as a resource to team members regarding relationship management practices, commercial banking solutions, and client engagement strategies.
- Mentor and provide guidance to Commercial Relationship Specialists and other developing team members.
- Contribute to market planning, sales strategy development, process improvement initiatives, and Commercial Banking Group projects.
- Foster collaborative partnerships across lending, treasury management, operations, retail banking, and other business lines to support client and organizational objectives.
Compliance & Regulatory Responsibility
- Ensure portfolio relationships are managed in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, Bank policies, and risk management practices.
- Maintain accurate and complete client and relationship documentation in accordance with established requirements.
- Complete all required compliance and regulatory training within established timeframes.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
- Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in commercial banking, business banking, treasury management, portfolio management, business development, relationship management, or a related financial services environment.
- Experience managing client relationships, business portfolios, or customer accounts with responsibility for retention, growth, or service delivery.
- Experience analyzing financial statements, account activity, business performance metrics, or similar financial information to support relationship management or business decisions.
- Experience identifying client needs and recommending products, services, or solutions within a regulated business environment.
- Experience participating in business development, prospecting, referral generation, or sales activities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent business applications.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively in written and verbal formats with clients, colleagues, and business partners.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently with limited supervision.
- Willingness and ability to travel locally for client meetings, prospecting activities, networking events, and community engagement opportunities, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related field.
- Three (3) or more years of experience in commercial banking, business banking, relationship management, treasury management, or commercial financial services.
- Experience managing a portfolio of commercial, nonprofit, or business banking relationships.
- Experience developing and executing relationship growth strategies or business development plans.
- Experience leading client meetings, relationship reviews, sales presentations, or solution discussions.
- Experience working with commercial lending, deposit products, treasury management services, or cash management solutions.
- Experience using customer relationship management (CRM) systems to manage client relationships, pipeline activity, and business development efforts.
- Experience mentoring, coaching, or providing guidance to less experienced employees.
- Experience working in a regulated financial institution or multi-state banking environment.
