Job Overview

The Merchandise Planning Executive Development Program (EDP) provides early-career professionals with valuable experience, training, and exposure to launch their careers within Macy's. The program combines structured learning, professional development workshops, and hands-on business experience in a collaborative and performance-driven environment.

Participants gain exposure to merchandise planning, forecasting and inventory management, while working alongside cross-functional partners across the organization. Through analytical projects and support of day-to-day business responsibilities, participants develop the skills needed to support merchandise strategies that drive sales, profitability, and inventory productivity.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be placed into an Assistant-level position. The program is based at Macy's corporate offices in New York City, with start dates throughout the year based on business needs.

What You Will Do

  • Analyze historical sales data, current trends, and market insights to support forecasting and business recommendations.
  • Assist in developing merchandise plans and assortment strategies in partnership with Buying, Assortment Planning and Inventory Management teams.
  • Monitor inventory levels, sales performance, and sell-through trends to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of merchandise financial plans, including sales, inventory, and margin targets.
  • Generate and maintain reports on sales performance, inventory metrics, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure business performance and track progress against goals.
  • Conduct competitive analysis and market research to identify customer trends and growth opportunities.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to support forecasting, inventory planning, and business strategies.
  • Utilize analytical tools and retail metrics to identify opportunities, solve business challenges, and support decision-making.
  • Present findings and recommendations to business partners and leadership.
  • Participate in professional development, training programs, and collaborative projects designed to build planning and leadership capabilities.
  • Support ad hoc analyses, special projects, and business initiatives as assigned.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.

Skills You Will Need

Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills

Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, draw insights, and make data-driven recommendations.

Business Acumen

Understanding of financial performance metrics, assortment planning principles, inventory productivity, and retail business drivers.

Forecasting & Inventory Planning

Ability to analyze demand trends, support forecasting activities, and contribute to inventory optimization strategies.

Communication & Presentation Skills

Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate insights effectively to stakeholders at all levels.

Collaboration & Relationship Building

Ability to build relationships, work cross-functionally, and partner effectively with teams across the organization.

Organizational & Time Management Skills

Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Technical Proficiency

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, with advanced Excel skills including lookups, pivot tables, formulas, and data analysis. Ability to analyze large data sets, generate business insights, and leverage reporting tools to support decision-making.

Adaptability & Initiative

Demonstrates curiosity, accountability, and a growth mindset with the ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing business needs.

Leadership Potential

Ability to influence others, take ownership of projects, and demonstrate initiative while contributing to team success.

Who You Are

  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply. Minimum 3.0 GPA required.
  • Demonstrated interest in retail, merchandising, planning, analytics, finance, or a related business field.
  • Strong academic performance and leadership experience through internships, campus involvement, work experience, or extracurricular activities.
  • This role involves performing essential job functions such as communication, collaboration, and use of office and computer systems. Responsibilities include the ability to access and review written and electronic information and to move within the work environment and interact with workplace materials as needed to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
