Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Duties

The Pharmacy Supervisor is a licensed pharmacist with knowledge and proficiency in pharmacy practice and pharmacy administration. The incumbent is responsible for the professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include overseeing the controlled substance program within pharmacy service, as well as assisting the facility controlled substance program at James A. Haley VA. This includes ensuring accountability for all controlled substances within pharmacy service and maintaining compliance with Controlled Substance Act and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations to minimize risk for loss and diversion and enhance patient safety. The Supervisory Pharmacist is responsible for supervising Pharmacy Technician Supervisors or any other assigned staff. The Pharmacy Supervisor is also responsible for: Manages an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include the controlled substance pharmacy program, to include policy development and specialty functions unique to the program to optimize cost effectiveness and patient outcomes. Supervises and manages multiple pharmacists and/or technicians. Develops effective communication with Union and is knowledgeable on the master and local agreement. Able to solve problems, coordinate and organize responsibilities to maximize outcomes in their assigned area. Supervises the work flow and gives direction to support personnel as needed. Able to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions. Creates and interprets service level policies and procedures. Serves as a drug information resource by providing up-to-date drug information to prescribers, other health care professionals, patients and caregivers. Serves as a role model and preceptor to pharmacy students, interns and residents. Assumes an active role in staff development of peers and provides educational in-services to nursing, medical staff or to other ancillary services. Participates in Performance Improvement (PI) Measurements / activities (Mock Surveys, Tracers). Supervises the activities and provides oversight of support personnel and technical staff in all aspects of medication distribution. Ensures drugs dispensed are completely and correctly labeled and packaged in full compliance with Federal rules and regulations. Ensures USP 797 regulations for controlled environment are followed. Assumes an active role in the overall pharmacy-training program consisting of students, externs, interns, residents, and professional and non-professional staff members.
