Wells Fargo is seeking a Strategy & Planning Managing Director or Executive Director to join the Wealth & Investment Management (WIM) Strategy team. The Strategy Director will advise and support the Head of WIM Strategy and the WIM leadership team in designing and driving business innovation, growth opportunities, and strategic priorities across the wealth and investment management ecosystem and will be accountable for developing and leading strategic plans, advancing business transformation, and positioning WIM for sustainable long-term growth in an evolving competitive and regulatory environment.

The Strategy Director will lead a team of Strategy professionals. They will own a portfolio of WIM’s highest-stakes strategic agendas from problem definition through executive decision and implementation.  They will work directly with, support, and influence members of the WIM Operating Committee and their teams.

The successful candidate brings a deep understanding of the wealth management and investment industry — client segments, advisor models, platform capabilities, investment products, regulatory considerations, and the competitive landscape — combined with the management consultant’s toolkit: structured problem solving, critical thinking, quantitative rigor, and concise executive communication. Critical success factors include managing effectively in a matrixed organization, building partnerships across business and functional areas, and leading through influence, with a sense of urgency and personal accountability for results.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and lead strategic plans that position WIM for sustainable long-term growth, and own the WIM annual strategic plan together with strategy presentations for the Board of Directors and Investor Day
  • Update, challenge, and refine the long-term (3–5 year) strategic vision and growth plan for an assigned portfolio of WIM businesses, encompassing advisory, brokerage, digital and self-directed wealth, deposits, lending, and trust
  • Develop and lead the strategy for digital and self-directed wealth products, including client segmentation, the self-directed-to-advised funnel, pricing and digital engagement economics, and build, buy, or partner recommendations
  • Lead the workplace wealth strategy across stock plan, equity compensation, and retirement offerings, and structure, negotiate, and steward partnership agreements — commercial terms, economics, and risk allocation — with Legal, Risk, Finance, Product, and Corporate Development partners
  • Lead the growth agenda for deposits, securities-based and mortgage lending, and trust and fiduciary relationships, including cash and sweep economics, client primacy, and channel-level opportunity sizing
  • Define WIM’s position in emerging areas including digital assets, converting regulatory developments, competitor moves, and client demand into a sequenced set of offer and investment decisions
  • Advance business transformation by identifying, sizing, and driving AI-enabled organizational efficiency across WIM and building the business case with Finance, Human Resources, and Technology
  • Advance WIM’s understanding of evolving client expectations, advisor needs, competitive trends, regulatory developments, and technology innovations, and continually benchmark across wealth managers, RIAs, asset managers, digital wealth platforms, private banks, and fintech entrants
  • Ensure strong alignment and coordination with firmwide and cross-LOB objectives, including with Consumer Banking and Lending, Commercial Banking, Corporate and Investment Banking, and Corporate Strategy
  • Manage and develop a team of less experienced managers and professional individual contributors, allocate people and financial resources for the team, and contribute to Wells Fargo’s firmwide Strategy capabilities
  • Lead the development and enhancement of the team’s internal consulting and analytics capabilities, and set an AI-enabled operating model in which agents and AI tooling carry the research, modeling, and material production traditionally performed at the analyst level
  • Ensure insights, strategic recommendations, and execution roadmaps are well communicated and understood by senior leaders and stakeholders across WIM and the enterprise
  • Provide strategic oversight and guidance to ensure business objectives — including responsible growth, risk excellence, and differentiated client and advisor experiences — are achieved, and develop policies and procedures where the work sets precedent

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of Strategy and Planning experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 4+ years of management or leadership experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • A seasoned strategy leader with 10+ years of progressively increasing responsibility in wealth management, private banking, asset management, retirement, digital wealth, or advisory platform strategy; alternatively, a Principal or Associate Partner at a top-tier management consulting firm with a wealth or asset management focus, or head or deputy head of corporate strategy at a peer wealth manager
  • Experience leading strategy for a high-growth or transformation-oriented business, and deep understanding of wealth management, including product and platform evolution, client segmentation, and advisor ecosystems
  • An innovation mindset with the ability to leverage emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to accelerate business performance — evidenced by AI agents or workflows the candidate has built into how strategic work gets done
  • Demonstrated expertise in several, and working familiarity across most, of: digital and self-directed wealth; partnerships, corporate development, or M&A; workplace wealth including stock plan and retirement; deposit, lending, and trust growth within a wealth channel; digital assets; operational and process improvement
  • Experience structuring and negotiating commercial partnership or vendor agreements, including economics, term-sheet alternatives, and risk allocation
  • Experience preparing Board of Directors and Investor Day strategy materials, ideally at a best-in-class peer
  • Experience managing in a large-scale, complex matrixed organization, and leading change through influence
  • Demonstrated ability to quantify operational effectiveness, identify strategic opportunities, and implement strategies that drive improved performance
