General Purpose of the Job

The Principal Web Developer, Marketing Communications is the senior-most individual contributor in the Marketing Communications developer lane, accountable for technical direction, platform stewardship and initiative-level delivery across DaVita public-facing digital properties. This role defines scalable web development standards, guides major modernization and platform efforts, advises leaders on technical strategy, and serves as the primary technical partner for internal teams and agencies while remaining embedded within Marketing Communications rather than IT. The role ensures the web channel can evolve safely, accessibly and efficiently while balancing business strategy, user experience, privacy, security, platform constraints and operational sustainability.

Primary contribution

Leads development initiatives end to end, shapes technical direction, determines resourcing recommendations, advises leaders and coordinates cross-functional execution across Marketing Communications, IT and agency partners.

Typical ownership

Owns the developer lane playbook, platform standards, release governance, modernization technical strategy, agency technical alignment, and escalation path for complex web platform decisions.

Ladder distinction

Aligns to P5 by managing initiatives end to end, creating a roadmap, determining resourcing, providing updates to key stakeholders, resolving difficult challenges and driving discussions outside the immediate function.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

In order of significance, the essential functions and responsibilities of the position are:

Technical Strategy & Platform Stewardship

  • Set technical direction for Marketing Communications web development across WordPress VIP properties, front-end architecture, theme strategy, component systems, release governance and platform documentation.
  • Create and maintain standards for code quality, accessibility, performance, security, documentation, environment management, branching strategy and release readiness.
  • Evaluate platform constraints, technical debt, tool introduction, agency proposals and modernization options; recommend paths that balance speed, risk and sustainability.
  • Serve as the senior technical advisor to Marketing Communications leadership for web modernization, platform operations, agency enablement and long-range web capability planning.

Initiative Leadership & Cross-Functional Execution

  • Lead complex developer initiatives end to end, including scope definition, roadmap planning, technical sequencing, dependency management, risk mitigation and stakeholder communication.
  • Partner with IT, Privacy, Cybersecurity, Analytics, Salesforce/CRM, content, design and agency teams to ensure solutions fit DaVita governance, compliance and experience expectations.
  • Own technical alignment for major launches, high-risk releases, web modernization milestones and multi-site changes across public-facing digital properties.
  • Translate technical risks and decisions into executive-ready recommendations and clear options for business leaders.

Development Excellence & Operational Governance

  • Guide standards for WordPress VIP development, Git workflows, CI/CD, local development, environment syncs, database refreshes, QA strategy and production support escalation.
  • Identify recurring operational pain points and lead improvements that reduce manual effort, release risk and dependency ambiguity across Marketing Communications.
  • Partner with technical teams to clarify ownership boundaries between Marketing Communications, IT and agency partners, especially where front-end, back-end, GCP, APIs or legacy platforms intersect.

Coaching, Enablement & Knowledge Sharing

  • Coach P3/P4 developers and adjacent digital teammates through architecture reviews, troubleshooting approaches, accessibility patterns, documentation feedback and technical decision-making.
  • Build durable knowledge assets so the team can scale beyond individual expertise, including playbooks, standards, roadmaps, runbooks and onboarding materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive web development experience, including senior technical ownership of enterprise CMS platforms, large-scale web ecosystems or comparable digital product environments.
  • Advanced proficiency with HTML5, CSS3/Sass, JavaScript, PHP, WordPress architecture, custom themes/plugins, Gutenberg/block development and Git-based release workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex web initiatives across internal teams, external agencies and technical partner groups.
  • Strong working knowledge of accessibility, technical SEO, web performance, security, privacy/compliance, analytics instrumentation and enterprise release governance.
  • Ability to define technical standards, influence stakeholders, resolve ambiguous problems and communicate clearly with leadership.
  • Experience in healthcare, regulated marketing, WordPress VIP, GCP/API integrations, Salesforce or MarTech ecosystems preferred.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

  • Advanced accessibility, WordPress VIP, JavaScript/React, cloud/platform, Agile/Scrum or security/compliance certifications preferred but not required.

Travel and Time Requirements

  • Minimal travel required.
  • Occasional evenings or weekends may be required to support critical launches, major incidents, vendor coordination or strategic planning sessions.

Career Pathway Signal

  • This role is designed as the terminal senior IC role for the Marketing Communications developer lane unless future expansion creates a higher-level technical leadership path.

Language Skills

Fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to successfully perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the position.
