Senior DevOps Engineer – FinOps (Remote)

About the Role

As a Senior DevOps Engineer specializing in FinOps, you will lead the technical strategy, design, and implementation of cloud financial engineering and automated cost governance across our enterprise cloud infrastructure. In this role, you will bridge platform engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE), and cloud economics by building automated guardrails, developer tooling, and intelligent infrastructure systems that maximize cloud ROI and operational efficiency.

You will embed financial accountability and cost transparency directly into the software development lifecycle (SDLC)—architecting shift-left CI/CD guardrails, policy-as-code validation, automated resource lifecycle workflows, and container-level cost allocation frameworks. We are seeking an experienced DevOps professional with deep expertise in enterprise cloud architecture, infrastructure as code (IaC), container orchestration, and software automation, paired with an advanced mastery of the FinOps Framework, cloud economic models, and unit economics.

What You'll Do

• Cloud FinOps Architecture & Strategy: Architect, implement, and maintain enterprise-grade cloud cost allocation, governance, and automated remediation systems across cloud environments.
• Shift-Left Cost Governance & Policy-as-Code: Implement automated cost estimation, budget limits, and policy-as-code validation (e.g., Infracost, Open Policy Agent/OPA, Sentinel, Checkov) directly into CI/CD pipelines to prevent architectural cost regressions prior to deployment.
• Infrastructure Automation & Tooling: Develop robust internal tools, microservices, and event-driven automation (Python, Go, serverless functions) for automated idle resource teardown, instance right-sizing, anomaly detection, and tag compliance enforcement.
• Kubernetes & Container Cost Optimization: Design and operationalize granular container cost allocation, bin-packing, and autoscaling strategies across Kubernetes platforms.
• Enterprise Billing Data Engineering: Build and scale automated data pipelines and analytical models to ingest, normalize, and analyze cloud billing datasets adhering to the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) using SQL, Athena, BigQuery, or Snowflake.
• Rate & Commitment Optimization Engineering: Model, automate, and manage enterprise commitment lifecycles (Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, Committed Use Discounts) and engineer resilient architectures for Spot and preemptible workload adoption.
• Unit Economics & Observability: Establish real-time telemetry systems linking infrastructure consumption metrics with business KPIs (e.g., cost per transaction, cost per tenant, cost per API call) in partnership with observability and analytics teams.
• Technical Leadership & FinOps Culture: Lead recurring technical cost architecture reviews with engineering directors and platform leads, providing actionable optimization recommendations and fostering a culture of cost-conscious engineering.
• Mentorship & Enablement: Mentor DevOps, SRE, and software engineers on cloud financial engineering principles, cost-effective system design patterns, and sustainable cloud architecture.
  

What We're Looking For

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, SRE, or Cloud Infrastructure Architecture in high-scale enterprise environments.
• 3+ years of dedicated technical experience implementing FinOps practices, cloud economic modeling, and automated cloud cost optimization.
• Advanced hands-on expertise with at least one major public cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP), including multi-account organization structures, networking, IAM, and enterprise billing APIs.
• Deep production expertise with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and configuration tooling (e.g., Terraform, OpenTofu, Terragrunt, CloudFormation, or Pulumi).
• Advanced proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language (e.g., Python, Go, Bash, or TypeScript) for developing automation, CLI tools, and API integrations.
• Production experience integrating automated checks, linters, and policy-as-code into modern CI/CD ecosystems (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, ArgoCD, Jenkins).
• Strong working knowledge of container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes / EKS / AKS / GKE), resource management, and container cost visibility tooling (e.g., Kubecost, OpenCost, Karpenter).
• Demonstrated experience with cloud rate optimization instruments (Savings Plans, RIs, CUDs), discount modeling, and enterprise commitment management.
• Strong data querying and modeling skills (SQL) with experience analyzing large-scale billing datasets (AWS CUR, Azure Cost Export, GCP Billing).
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Active FinOps certifications (FinOps Certified Practitioner - FOCP, FinOps Certified Professional) and advanced cloud provider certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect / DevOps Engineer Professional, Azure Solutions Architect / DevOps Expert, or GCP Professional Cloud Architect).
• Experience architecting data pipelines and analytical layers on top of cloud billing data using dbt, Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks following the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS).
• Experience with third-party cloud financial management platforms (e.g., CloudZero, Vantage, Datadog Cloud Cost Management, Kubecost).
• Deep understanding of distributed systems architecture, microservices design patterns, and storage tiering optimization.
• Proven track record of delivering measurable cost reductions (e.g., 20%+ efficiency gains) and establishing unit economic frameworks across large engineering organizations.

The Salary Range for the role is $141,000.00 - $204,000.00 per year.

 

 

 

If a candidate is hired, they will be paid at least the minimum wage according to their geographical jurisdiction and the exemption status for the position.

New York Exempt: New York City and Long Island: $66,300.00/year, Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties: $66,300.00/year, Remainder of New York state: $62,353.20/year New York Non-exempt: New York City and Long Island: $17.00/hour, Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties: $17.00/hour, Remainder of New York state: $16.00/hour

Washington Exempt: $80,168.40/year Washington Non-exempt: Bellingham: $19.13/hour, Burien: $21.71/hour, Everette: $20.77/hour, Unincorporated King County: $20.82/hour, Renton: $21.57/hour, Seattle: $21.30/hour, Tukwila: $21.65/hour, Remainder of Washington state: $17.13/hour
