SAM is a fast-growing and global sensory and consumer research consultancy.  Our mission is to allow consumers a voice in the development of outstanding food, beverage, pet, and health & beauty products so to create high quality and memorable experiences.  We help our clients:

SAM Consumer and Sensory Research, formerly The National Food Lab, is the division of SAM that provides these services for all USA-based clients.  Our sensory science program resides in our USA headquarters in Minneapolis, MN.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Data Solutions Hub Sr Manager, the Survey, Data, and Reporting Analyst plays a crucial role in survey design, programming quality control, data coding and processing, analysis and report creation, and project management. This role is an analytical and technical partner to the client service/project manager, working on many research projects at a time. In addition, the team collaborates with the Operations and Recruiting teams to ensure efficient and effective research execution and high-quality data and results. This role will support both consumer and sensory research programs.

Responsibilities:

  1. Survey design:
    1. Create surveys to screen respondents to find those that qualify based on attitudes and purchase behavior matching the needs of the client’s research objectives.
    2. Create questionnaire surveys to understand consumers’ experience with the test products and answer research objectives. Make recommendations for survey design to ensure neutrality, consistency with SAM norms/best practices, and the highest data quality.
    3. Include clear and complete instructions to ensure survey programming team according to the required logic/functions.
  2. Quality check programmed surveys and prepare them for use by recruiting or operations:
    1. Send surveys to programming team, answer questions, and quality check work
    2. Perform rigorous quality assurance testing and partner with programming teams to ensure accurate execution
    3. Problem solve ways to set up the survey to capture data efficiently and effectively for the respondent, client, and research team needs
    4. Occasionally program screener and questionnaire surveys with a focus on quality, accuracy, and efficiency
    5. Implement the recruitment plan including creating quotas and sessions in our recruiting system.
    6. Implement survey relaxations and changes quickly when needed
  3. Create materials for the test, such as product serve rotation or design file, tray labels, placemats, etc.
  4. Data processing:
    1. Collaborate with client service to create the data analysis and reporting plan to fully meet the client’s research objectives.
    2. Close and reconcile projects after the test day.
    3. Learn and execute data process procedures in our proprietary data intelligence system, including ensure all data is correctly and completely loaded and coded. Troubleshoot any inconsistencies in the data across systems, survey, programming as needed
    4. Work with the team to improve processes and project setup to ensure automation into the Data Intelligence Database
  5. Report creation:
    1. Complete the statistical analysis process for each study and prepare analysis files for clients.
    2. Create and update PowerPoint report templates
    3. Populate and quality check reports
    4. Collaborate across teams to innovate and improve PowerPoint report templates
  6. Manage fielding of online surveys and home use tests to ensure quotas and goals are met on time
  7. Work with outside programming and sample provider vendors/partners based on the needs of the test

Key Accountabilities:

  • Learn and implement SAM processes and best practice standards. 
  • Independently manage typically 3~7 assigned projects at any time from study setup through final reporting
  • Anticipate project risks and proactively develop solutions
  • Ensure all project components align with research objectives and downstream reporting requirements, and the needs of other operational teams
  • Serve as the primary technical expert for assigned projects on the Data Team
  • Maintain high standards of quality with minimal oversight

Qualifications

  • Proactive project management of your assigned projects across several tasks, understand the project objectives and timeline, and ask questions as needed
  • Collaboration skills to work well across different teams and enjoy working with others
  • Ability to coordinate work across multiple functions and effectively manage dependencies, timelines, and communication among stakeholders
  • Effective quality management to look for ways to improve quality, demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness
  • Demonstrated ability to understand how decisions made in survey design, fieldwork, data processing, and reporting impact the overall research outcome, stakeholder experience, and other teams downstream
  • The ability to pay close attention to detail and zoom in, as well as zoom out to understand the broad project goals and how details can have a big impact on other teams or processes
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying issues before they impact project outcomes, including questionnaire logic, quota setup, data integrity, reporting accuracy, and deliverable quality
  • Proven ability to learn and adapt to new technologies quickly
  • Ability to think critically and recognize process improvements
  • Mathematical skills, such as probability, statistical inference, and complex logical rules, to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions and basic Algebra to practical situations
  • Content creation skills for survey design and visual, storytelling reporting
  • Experience with AI and prompt engineering in a professional setting

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a four-year Bachelor of Arts/Science degree
  • 3+ years related business experience in a related field, such as:
    • Consumer, sensory, and/or marketing research
    • Market research operations
    • Survey design
    • Consumer research data analytics
    • Storytelling report creation
    • Survey programming

Experience with the following programs:

  • Microsoft Office 365 products (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, One Note etc.)
  • Rosetta Studio a plus or any other report population program
  • Power BI or other data visualization/reporting software
  • WinCross
  • Forsta (previously Decipher) knowledge a plus or any other survey programming software
  • XML or HTML a plus but not required
  • Python knowledge a plus but not required
  • R Studio knowledge a plus but not required
  • XLSTAT knowledge a plus but not required
