Our client is seeking a Real Estate Tax Associate for its Homewood, Illinois office. This role is ideal for an attorney interested in property tax law, valuation analysis, tax objection litigation, and economic development incentives. The position offers hands-on exposure to property tax appeals, incentive classifications, and complex real estate matters.

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9AM-5PM

Please Note: Open to a self‑starter who learns quickly, takes initiative, and thrives in a collaborative legal environment. While prior property tax appeal experience is highly desirable, candidates who demonstrate strong analytical ability, legal writing skill, and the capacity to master new concepts will be strongly considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Assist with tax proration matters and related projects.
  • Participate in Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs.
  • Prepare professional correspondence and legal documentation.
  • Coordinate with county representatives regarding hearings, scheduling, settlements, refunds, and related matters.
  • Analyze assessment records, valuation histories, and related documentation to develop effective appeal strategies.
  • Maintain appeal dockets and oversee all phases of obtaining, monitoring, and renewing tax incentive classifications.
  • Manage appeals for real estate development projects, including new construction, rehabilitation, and demolition matters.
  • Participate in economic development incentive matters (e.g., Class 6b, Class 7, Class 8, TIF) following appropriate training.
  • Communicate professionally with clients regarding appeal status, information requests, outcomes, and strategic recommendations.
  • Support tax objection cases in Circuit Court, including monitoring filings, managing court calls, and assisting with document production.
  • Draft, file, and manage complaints, briefs, and supporting evidence for property tax appeals involving income-producing and owner‑occupied properties.

Qualifications (Must-Haves)

  • Active Illinois law license in good standing.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Strong legal writing and persuasive brief‑drafting skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to interpret complex assessments and valuation data.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines independently.
  • Effective interpersonal skills when working with clients, appraisers, attorneys, and government officials.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in real estate law, municipal development, or property tax litigation.
  • Two or more years of experience preparing and filing property tax appeals with local assessing bodies or appeal agencies.
