The Opportunity
This position works out of our Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin or Chicago locations in the Abbott Corporate Division.
The US Manager, Patient Programs and Market Access, Procurement will be accountable for shaping, influencing and delivering Abbott’s third-party procurement strategy across Patient Programs and Market Access services in the United States, with ownership for commercial value, supplier performance, risk management and the long-term sustainability of critical patient-facing programs across Abbott Business Units.
This role acts as a senior procurement and commercial partner to US and Divisional Leadership, ensuring Abbott’s outsourced patient programs, market access solutions and related service-provider models are strategically aligned, operationally effective, compliant and financially sustainable.
This role influences complex commercial decisions across the US healthcare environment, supporting businesses such as Nutrition Products, Diabetes Care, Generic-Branded Pharmaceuticals, Clinical Diagnostics and Cardiovascular Medical Devices.
This strategic position will drive category strategy and execution across patient support, patient engagement, access and reimbursement services, hub services, nursing and clinical educator programs, affordability solutions, call centres, field reimbursement services, digital patient platforms and other third-party services supporting patients throughout their product journey.
The role will also act as the “One Abbott Business Partner” for all Abbott Business Units, serving as a unified point of contact for procurement matters related to Patient Programs and Market Access in the United States.
The ideal candidate will bring strong procurement, commercial and negotiation experience, together with an understanding of the US healthcare and patient-support environment. Experience managing strategic service providers, patient support programs, hub services, contact centres, digital patient platforms and reimbursement solutions will be highly valued. The role requires the ability to solve complex problems by taking a broad, strategic perspective and balancing patient and business needs with cost, performance, compliance and operational continuity.
What You’ll Do
Strategic activities
Develop and implement the US procurement category strategy for Patient Programs and Market Access, ensuring alignment with overall Abbott business and procurement objectives.
Own a portfolio of strategic category and sourcing initiatives across the United States, setting priorities, sequencing projects and ensuring value realization across business units and patient programs.
Serve as the senior “One Abbott” procurement representative for Patient Programs and Market Access, establishing governance models, escalation mechanisms and consistent ways of working across Abbott Business Units.
Define and implement US-wide procurement standards for patient-support and market-access services, enabling effective supplier selection, contracting, commercial management and performance measurement.
Develop sourcing and supplier strategies for patient-support programs, reimbursement and access services, affordability programs, hub services, nursing and educator programs, patient call centres and digital engagement services.
Identify opportunities for supplier consolidation, service standardization, commercial model optimization, automation and process improvement.
Evaluate alternative service-delivery and pricing models to improve flexibility, scalability, patient experience and overall value.
Support new product launches, program implementations and changes to existing patient-support models.
Provide leadership and influence across business, procurement and supplier teams.
Operational activities
Benchmark supplier rates, service models and performance against relevant market practices.
Lead RFIs, RFPs, supplier evaluations, competitive sourcing processes and supplier-selection recommendations.
Apply strong commercial and negotiation expertise across complex patient-facing service categories.
Lead or sponsor high-impact negotiations with strategic Patient Programs and Market Access suppliers.
Draft and negotiate contracts, Master Service Agreements, Statements of Work, Service Level Agreements and change orders.
Oversee supplier governance, contract renewals, commercial commitments and change-control requirements.
Monitor and analyse supplier performance across quality, patient experience, responsiveness, compliance, financial performance, staffing, training and technology.
Validate supplier proposals, invoices, credits, licence costs, staffing charges and pass-through expenses against contractual commitments.
Drive savings, cost avoidance, demand management and continuous improvement.
Develop and leverage expertise in Abbott’s best-in-class procurement frameworks, tools and methodologies.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree or bachelor’s degree in Business, Procurement, Supply Chain, Finance, Healthcare, Marketing or a related field.
Six or more years of experience in procurement, category management, strategic sourcing, commercial operations, market access, patient services or a related function.
Proven experience leading complex, cross-functional sourcing or commercial projects involving multiple stakeholders.
High proficiency in Excel and strong analytical skills across spend, supplier pricing, headcount, licences, volumes and financial value.
Demonstrated experience influencing financial outcomes, including savings, cost avoidance, productivity and commercial-model optimization.
Strong negotiation capabilities, with the ability to secure favourable outcomes in complex, regulated and multi-stakeholder environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting Patient Programs, Patient Services, Market Access or Commercial Operations categories.
Understanding of the US healthcare, reimbursement, patient-access and patient-support environment.
Experience sourcing or managing hub services, benefits verification, prior authorization, affordability programs, field reimbursement, nursing services, clinical educators, call centres or digital patient platforms.
Proven track record in category management, supplier segmentation, service-model optimization and strategic planning.
Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions, regions and organizational levels.
Demonstrated leadership, with the ability to drive change, influence stakeholders and deliver results in a matrixed environment.
Proficiency in procurement technologies, spend analytics, sourcing platforms and supplier performance-management tools.
Strong presentation and influencing skills, capable of engaging internal Abbott leaders and external supplier stakeholders.
Ability to collaborate effectively with Market Access, Patient Services, Marketing, Commercial Operations, Medical, Finance, Legal, Privacy, Compliance, Quality and Information Security.
US-wide experience, with a solid understanding of regional market dynamics.
Fluent in English. Additional languages are an asset.
Experience in the pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostics, healthcare services or life-sciences sectors is highly advantageous.
