Summary

The Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) Registered Nurse is responsible for assisting the Nurse Manager of the APU in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of nursing services in the APU. The ANM has the designated first-line supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of the unit, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice.

Duties

Duties are but not limited to: The ANM demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. The ANM, in collaboration with the Education Department, develops, coordinates, and provides ongoing education to nursing personnel for knowledge and skills enhancement while ensuring clinical competence. The ANM may cover in the absence of the Nurse Manager and represents the Nurse Executive during non-administrative hours .The ANM RN is a professional RN qualified by education and experience to provide professional leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. Provides professional psychiatric and/or medical nursing care to acute and chronically ill Veterans. The ANM is accountable for adhering to established policies and standards of care and practice. The ANM is responsible for assisting the NM in supervision and administration of nursing care delivery, managing nursing personnel, and coordinating all related activities. The ANM demonstrates leadership in developing and implementing programs to improve the delivery of patient care. Will maintain clinical proficiency in area of oversight. The ANM will evaluate procedural, pharmacological, and other therapeutic treatment regimen, monitoring to ensure compliance with all medical center policies and procedures. Will successfully transition new hires into the position by promptly communicating performance elements and standards within applicable timeframes, providing ongoing feedback and coaching, and making appropriate use of the probationary period to assess the employee's ability to perform. Preferred Experience: - Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; advanced nursing or leadership education is highly desirable. - Minimum of 2 or 3 years of recent nursing experience in an acute inpatient psychiatric/mental health setting preferred. - Previous charge nurse, team lead, supervisory, or nursing leadership experience preferred. - Experience caring for patients with acute psychiatric conditions, behavioral emergencies, suicide/self-harm risk, aggression, and complex behavioral needs. - Demonstrated experience with de-escalation, crisis intervention, restraint/seclusion reduction, and maintaining a safe therapeutic environment. - Knowledge of levels of observation, environmental and ligature-risk safety, contraband/hazardous-item management, and inpatient psychiatric safety practices. - Experience with staff supervision, scheduling, performance management, coaching, education, and competency development. - Experience supporting quality improvement, regulatory compliance, patient safety, and survey readiness. - Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with psychiatry, social work, psychology, nursing, VA Police, and other interdisciplinary team members. - Strong communication, conflict-resolution, clinical judgment, and leadership skills in a high-acuity environment. Work Schedule: Night Shift, 6:30pm-3:00am. Tour subject to change depending on the needs of facility. Require weekends and no holidays. Requirements

In order to grant credit towards an appointment based on foreign nursing education higher than the associate degree level, formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized degree equivalency evaluation agency accepted by VA such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD) must be obtained.
