GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Performs fusion welding on aircraft and ground support equipment to a qualified Welding Procedures Specification (WPS), performs structural fusion welding on aerospace parts and components per the requirements of specifications as prescribed by Engineering Drawings and Work Orders.

DUTIES:

  • Uses hand-welding, flame-cutting, hand-soldering, or brazing equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentions, or seams of fabricated metal products.
  • Reads and understands product/process drawings, procedures, weld symbols and quality requirements
  • Fabricates manufacture-welded parts from engineering drawing
  • Performs fusion welding and torch brazing for ground support equipment, ensuring the procedure is completed per the requirements of the national welding and brazing codes and specifications.
  • Welds a wide variety of materials such as aluminum, magnesium, alloyed and low alloy steel, stainless steel and nickel alloy steels.
  • Make parameter adjustments, within the limits of procedure, to fine tune the process to achieve conformance standards
  • Determines the sequence of welding to prevent or reduce the amount of warp to the weld, designs and fabricates weld holding fixtures as necessary to perform individual welding projects, performs pre-heat and post weld stress relief operations, maintains weld records.
  • Required Works closely with supervision and is responsible for maintaining an inventory of welding materials and supplies
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in the field of DOD Military aviation maintenance in the last ten years
  • Of the 5 years of DoD Military Aviation Maintenance, the welder shall have a minimum of three years' experience in aeronautical welding in an aviation maintenance environment.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge, experience, and working level skills/ability in aviation and aerospace welding, and structures sheet metal and fabrication.
  • Must follow Military Specifications 1595 in the following materials: Steel, Stainless Steel, and Aluminum.
  • Must be a graduate of a school equivalent to Navy A and/or C school or Certificate of Welding.
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Secret Clearance

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for certain periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands, working at heights with fall protection devices.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds and carry for short distances.
  • May be required to read dials/gauges, identify small objects and hand tools.
  • Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depth.
  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, APU, etc.
