Summary

You will serve as a Social Services Aid (YCC) Seasonal Yellowstone National Park. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty is April-May but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2027. Duties

Major Duties Summary: Provides education and recreation opportunities, as well as, mentoring, guidance, and oversight to teen enrollees. Plans and leads weekend and night recreational activitites (day hiking, backpacking, swimming, rafting, park exploration, wildlife watching, fishing, journaling, etc.) including driving. Assists in leading a crew on work projects (such as land-resource projects, trail rehabilitation, fence construction and installation, food-storage box installation, native species conservation, etc). Provides safe environment (physical and emotional) for self, coworkers, and teen enrollees including identifying and mitigating safety hazards. Mentors and counsels enrollees on personal and shared community living. Serves as a group leader at a residential Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program. The Yellowstone YCC base camp/facility is located in Mammoth Hot Springs, headquarters of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, elevation 6,200 feet. The YCC facility consists of a dormitory for enrollees and YCC Staff, who are required to live there, and a dining hall facility that is used for meals and meetings during the weekends. From Monday through Friday, work crews mainly camp in front country and backcountry campsites throughout Yellowstone National Park. Physical Demands: The work requires much physical exertion in the outdoors such as walking over wet, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, climbing or similar activities. Usually work requires average agility and flexibility. A condition of employment is wearing of a hard hat as prescribed by regulations. All work projects are physical in nature and include backcountry trail maintenance and construction, campground restoration work, fence work, and a wide variety of research and resource management work projects. Significant mountainous hiking and backpacking (approximately 10 miles a day) is required during recreational outings, resource education activities, and accessing more remote backcountry work sites with often lifting or carrying equipment weighing more than 50 pounds. Work Environment: The majority of the work is performed outdoors. Temperatures and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of outdoor work. Incumbent must conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to injure self, enrollees, station personnel, or property with which entrusted. All work projects are completed with enrollee's safety in mind.

Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service. You are required to wear a uniform and comply with uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Government housing may be available. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You will be required to camp overnight away from home up to 6 nights per month. You must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. You must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles. Some positions filled with this announcement may be covered by a union.

Well Qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors and are proficient in most of the requirements of the job. Qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors and are proficient in some, but not all of the requirements of the job. You will be assessed in the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics): Leadership Teaching Others Team Building Current or former displaced Federal employees who are surplus, displaced, or involuntarily separated have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP). To be considered under CTAP/ICTAP, you must be well-qualified, score at least 85 (i.e., meet the minimum qualification requirements, including any selective placement factors; education, and experience requirements), and be able to perform the duties of the position upon entry.
