Summary
The Smithsonian Institution is a diverse museum and research complex dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. This position is located in Smithsonian Institution, Office of Protection Services. The Office of Protection Services (OPS) is responsible for overseeing, a large museum/complex law enforcement and security program, and leading and providing protection throughout the Smithsonian Institution.
Duties
The Security Guard position provides physical protection of museum property and grounds and enforces Institution rules regarding safety and protection of staff and visitors within the Institution's boundaries. In this position, you will: Enforce a wide variety of federal and local laws, rules and regulations. Remain alert for unusual conditions and incidents. Deny admission to unauthorized persons. Prevents unauthorized removal of facility property. Patrol to prevent or detect and deal with break-ins and trespassers, parking lost thefts and vandalism.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment Qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. For information on qualification requirements, see Qualification Standards Handbook for General Schedule Positions on OPM website. Incumbent must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance. Incumbent must be available for work on evenings, weekends and holidays. Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) qualifications. This position is restricted to applicants with veterans preference; however, applications will be accepted from non-preference eligibles who may be referred for employment consideration only in the absence of applicants with veterans preference. This position requires a pre-employment drug screening. This position requires bi-annual standard security force firearm certification to include firearms (handguns, rifles and shot guns), OC Spray and ASP Baton. This position requires selectee(s) to be able to wear and be able to employ all issued weapons while on duty. Must obtain and maintain CPR and AED qualifications. Failure to re-qualify will result in removal from the position. This position requires selectee(s) to undergo and pass a recurring medical examination. This position requires selectee(s) to participate in and pass a Defensive Tactics course. Employment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment requirements process that may consist of: structured interview, drug test, laboratory screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation. Issuance of a final offer of employment from SI is contingent upon you successfully completing all pre-employment requirements, including a structured interview, drug test, laboratory screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.
Qualifications and evaluation
Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job related competencies below: Law and Rule Enforcement Emergency Management Property Protection Crime Prevention Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
