This role is onsite located in Willis Tower (Chicago, IL), St Paul, MN, or Santa Clara, CA.

Abbott is seeking a patent agent with strong analytical skills to help advance IP strategy and strengthen patent portfolios.

This role sits at the intersection of patent strategy and data analytics, helping shape how the IP Strategy team uses patent data to inform portfolio decisions and support business priorities.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with large datasets, identifying patterns, developing analytical frameworks, and translating complex information into clear, decision-ready insights. Candidates may bring deeper experience in either patent practice or data analytics but should demonstrate the curiosity, technical fluency, and judgment to operate effectively across both disciplines.

Responsibilities

Project Ownership & Strategic Execution

  • Own assigned IP Strategy workstreams from scoping through execution, ensuring outputs align with business priorities, leadership needs, and patent portfolio objectives.
  • Proactively communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs; recommended actions to stakeholders.

Patent Data Analysis & Insights

  • Aggregate, clean, and analyze patent-related datasets to support IP Strategy projects, portfolio reviews, strategic planning, and leadership discussions.
  • Develop repeatable analytical frameworks and dashboards that convert complex patent data into structured insights.

Data Management

  • Improve how the team acquires, organizes, and uses data from external sources and across internal systems, including identifying gaps and opportunities to improve usability, consistency, and accessibility.
  • Support data governance, documentation, and repeatable processes for patent analytics work.

AI Integration & Enablement

  • Evaluate opportunities to apply AI-enabled tools to IP Strategy workflows where they can improve data capture, insight generation, efficiency, consistency, or decision quality.
  • Use approved AI-enabled tools to streamline patent analysis, improve insight generation, and support adoption of effective new workflows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, data science, or a related field; technical background sufficient to understand and analyze patent portfolios across medical devices, diagnostics, and nutrition technology areas.
  • Registration to practice before the USPTO.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in patent analytics, IP strategy, patent portfolio management, patent prosecution, or data analytics in a technical or IP-related environment.
  • Experience with Power BI or comparable data visualization and dashboarding tools.
  • Strong analytical skills, including experience identifying patterns, trends, and business-relevant insights from complex datasets.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex, cross-functional projects and deliver high-quality work on agreed timelines.
  • Strong strategic judgment, with the ability to connect patent data, technical context, and business priorities to support well-informed decisions.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex analyses into concise narratives, dashboards, and recommendations for senior stakeholders.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity, defining new analytical approaches, and maintaining focus on prioritized initiatives, business-critical questions, and agreed deliverables.
