The RoleĀ
General Motors isĀ seekingĀ a highly skilled and motivatedĀ Engine Combustion & Airflow Technical SpecialistĀ to join our Engine Performance and Calibration team. This role is critical in shaping the future of internal combustion engine (ICE) technology through high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The ideal candidate will have deepĀ expertiseĀ inĀ engine airflow,Ā gas exchange,Ā combustion modeling, fuel injectionĀ spray,Ā exhaustĀ systemsĀ and emissions control, and will contribute to the design and optimization of next-generation gasoline andĀ dieselĀ combustion systems and airpaths.Ā
What You'll DoĀ
Lead the technicalĀ methodĀ development and roadmap forĀ fuel spray,Ā in-cylinder mixture preparation,Ā combustion analysis, exhaust and aftertreatment systems,Ā manifoldsĀ and boosting systems.Ā Ā
Own scorecards for critical hardware release metrics for combustion, airflow, exhaust systems, aftertreatment, and exhaust sensorsĀ
Design andĀ optimizeĀ combustion chamber geometries for improved efficiency, power output, and emissions performance.Ā
Simulate and interpretāÆcombustion processes,āÆheat transfer,āÆcold start behavior, andāÆcatalyst heatingāÆstrategies.Ā
Provide component-level and/or system-level design recommendations toĀ Hardware & Calibration Technical SpecialistsĀ based on interpretation of analysis resultsĀ
Own and enhance current standard analysis practices and/or tools to improve prediction fidelity and/or execution speedĀ
Lead, execute, and coordinateāÆanalysis capability development initiatives, with emphasis on anāÆāall virtualāāÆfutureĀ
Drive testing toĀ support the development of first-time capable analysis techniquesĀ
Stays abreast ofĀ new technologyĀ and competitive productsĀ
LeadĀ cross-functional teams including engine design, calibration, controls, and emissions compliance.Ā
Interface with software vendors to convey future needs and impart changeāÆĀ
Work with leadership,Ā developmentĀ partners,āÆand PMT Technical Specialists toāÆidentifyāÆgaps and priorities for analysis growthāÆĀ
Seek outāÆstate of the artāÆtools and methodsāÆandāÆmaintaināÆa benchmark of industry capability and trendsāÆāÆĀ
Lead analysis support for code red and urgent product issue resolutionāÆĀ
InterfaceāÆwith otherāÆvirtualāÆgroups toāÆestablishāÆcommon processesāÆĀ
CommunicateāÆstatus to leadership and escalateāÆissues/roadblocks within the organization, as necessaryāÆĀ
RepresentāÆGMāÆforāÆexternal collaborations and conferencesāÆĀ
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)Ā
10+Ā yearsā experienceĀ with compressible CFD analysis of powertrain-related systemsĀ
MSĀ in Mechanical Engineering, AerospaceĀ EngineeringĀ or a related field with a focus on internal combustion engines or fluid dynamicsĀ
7+Ā yearsā experienceĀ in CFD software (CONVERGE, STAR-CD, STAR-CCM+ or similar) for gasoline or diesel mixture preparation / combustion simulationĀ
Highly proficient withĀ ProStar, ICEM,Ā Hypermesh,Ā Tgrid, or equivalent CFD meshing softwareĀ
Highly proficient with Converge, Siemens CCM+ In-Cylinder Solution,Ā StarCD, AVL Fire, or equivalent CFD softwareĀ
Highly proficient withĀ Ensight,Ā ProStarĀ or equivalent CFD post-processing softwareĀ
Proficient in programming (Java, MATLAB, Python), workflow automation, and customization of tools surrounding main vendor softwareĀ
Strong understandingĀ of engine combustion testing, dataĀ acquisitionĀ and analysisĀ
Demonstrated experienceĀ leveragingĀ machine learning,Ā advanced statistical methods,Ā model-basedĀ calibrationĀ and/or multi-disciplinary CAE optimizationĀ
What Will Give YouĀ AĀ Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)Ā
PhD in Mechanical EngineeringĀ or related fieldsĀ
Proficient in application of machine learning, data driven modeling techniques in context of engine simulationsĀ
Proficient with GT-Power, WAVE, AVL Boost, or equivalent 1D engine simulation softwareĀ
Experience with hands-onĀ engine testing, dataĀ acquisitionĀ and calibration tools (AVL Concerto,Ā Indicom, ETAS)Ā
