Summary
You will serve as a FUL - Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) Fish and Wildlife Service Region One. This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of ten years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition at management's discretion.
Duties
Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Helps plan and carry out wildlife surveys and recommends wildlife management actions. Assists in planning complex wildlife studies by suggesting ideas, choosing research methods, and setting up procedures, as well as identifying needed costs, equipment, and staffing. Monitors and helps manage wildlife populations, plant disease issues, invasive plants, mowing/seeding work, and vegetation removal. Captures wildlife, applies visual and radio tags, and collects physiological and movement data. Tracks environmental conditions such as temperature, precipitation, streamflow, snow depth, wind, and humidity. Builds databases and analyzes data using standard statistical methods for wildlife reports. Uses GIS and other systems to enter and retrieve data. Creates charts, graphs, and illustrations with software such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Harvard Graphics. Operates tractors, trucks, small watercraft, and equipment such as generators, radios, radio-tracking gear, water-monitoring devices, GPS units, and cameras. Provides direction and guidance to biological technicians, volunteers, and YCC participants, including safe use of tools and vehicles. Attends meetings with landowners, sports groups, and local government officials.
Requirements

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a one year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Under this authority, competitive rating, ranking, and veterans' preference procedures do not apply. The Servicing Human Resources Office will determine whether applicants meet the qualification and eligibility requirements described in this announcement. This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. Physical Demands: Field work requires strenuous activity for significant periods of time, often walking over rough terrain and in muddy conditions; on rough or uneven surfaces; wading through vegetation choked marshes, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and in many instances during difficult weather conditions. Collection of bird survey data requires good vision and field work results in exposure to such things as: poison ivy, insects, sun, wind, temperature variation and many varieties of pollen. Data interpretation and processing require extensive time at a computer terminal. Working Conditions: Work includes office and outdoor settings. There is regular exposure to high and low temperature extremes, inclement weather, dusty/noisy environments, working near heavy equipment, The incumbent is expected to perform duties in a safe and orderly manner, so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property. Field activities are normally conducted in remote locations and often under primitive living conditions. Small boats, canoes, or small aircraft may be used for travel or as a survey platform. The duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
