Lead Software Engineer (Frontend Engineering)

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to design, build, and improve secure, accessible, and high-performing frontend applications, including external-facing experiences within the CCIBT team. This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on strong frontend engineering. The engineer will use micro frontend architecture where appropriate, rather than treating it as the only approach to application development. 

The ideal candidate brings deep experience with React, JavaScript, TypeScript, and enterprise frontend architecture. They will work closely with Product, UX, Platform Engineering, Security, and Architecture teams to deliver scalable applications, improve engineering practices, and guide other engineers through design, coding, and technical problem-solving.

In this role, you will: 

• Lead complex technology initiatives with broad impact, contributing directly to frontend design, coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and production support. 

• Design and build secure, accessible, responsive, and high-performing web applications, including external-facing experiences. 

• Define and apply frontend architecture and engineering standards, including reusable components, design systems, and continuous integration and continuous delivery practices. 

• Design and implement micro frontends where appropriate; guide integration, communication between applications, event-driven interactions, and shared application state. 

• Integrate frontend applications with backend APIs and services, including authentication and authorization requirements. 

• Improve frontend performance, reliability, and observability through measurement, troubleshooting, and targeted optimization. 

• Review code and architecture, address technical debt, and mentor engineers through hands-on guidance and peer coaching. 

• Evaluate complex technical options against business objectives, the enterprise technology environment, security requirements, and long-term maintainability. 

• Partner with Product, UX, Security, Platform Engineering, Architecture, and other engineering teams on technical roadmaps, modernization, and implementation decisions. 

Required Qualifications:

• 5+ years of Software Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, or education. 

• 4+ years of experience developing enterprise-grade frontend applications. 

• 4+ years of experience with Java, JavaScript and TypeScript. 

• 4+ years of experience with React and modern frontend frameworks. 

• 3+ years of experience designing and implementing micro frontend architecture, including experience with Module Federation or Web Components. 

• 3+ years of experience with component-based architecture and reusable UI libraries. 

• 3+ years of experience with state management frameworks such as Redux, Zustand, or similar solutions. 

• 3+ years of experience developing RESTful APIs and integrating frontend applications with backend services. 

• 2+ years of experience with frontend testing frameworks such as Jest, Playwright, Cypress, or equivalent. 

• 2+ years of experience implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines and DevOps practices. 

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience implementing micro frontends with frameworks or tools such as single-spa, Nx, or similar platforms. 

• Experience building and maintaining enterprise design systems and shared component libraries. 

• Experience with frontend observability and monitoring solutions. 

• Knowledge of browser internals, frontend scalability patterns, and performance optimization, including bundle optimization, lazy loading, caching, and runtime performance. 

• Experience with authentication, authorization, communication between applications, event-driven patterns, and shared application state.   
• Experience working with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform, Azure, or Amazon Web Services. 

• Full-stack or server-side development experience, including Node.js or server-side rendering frameworks. 

• Experience modernizing large-scale legacy applications. 

• Experience using approved AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering efficiency while maintaining code quality, security, and review standards.   
• Knowledge of frontend security and accessibility standards, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. 

• Experience with Git, Agile development methodologies, and modern software engineering practices.
