Senior Consultant - Automotive Software / Functional Safety

UL Solutions is seeking a Functional Safety Expert with strong embedded software, electronic system, and safety development experience. The ideal candidate has hands-on product development experience and deep expertise in ISO 26262, allowing them to use their expertise to train, advise, and support customers developing safety-critical systems.

This role includes creating and reviewing functional safety work products for a wide range of technologies, including electrified vehicle platforms, ADAS and automated driving systems, battery management systems, power electronics, industrial automation equipment, aerospace, and other complex safety-related applications.

While the primary focus of this role is automotive functional safety, familiarity with related standards such as ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO 8800, ISO 42001, ISO 21434, IEC 62508 is beneficial.

• Lead the development and review of functional safety work products in compliance with ISO 26262 and related standards.
• Create or support activities focused on ISO 26262 Parts 2/3/4/6
• Develop safety concepts and architectures for vehicle systems, electronic components, and software-controlled features.
• Define and decompose safety requirements based on system, hardware, and software architectures.
• Perform safety analyses including FMEA, FTA, DFA, STPA, and related methods.
• Support safety case development and evidence-based safety argumentation.
• Perform technical reviews, confirmation measures, compliance assessments, and safety evaluations.
• Lead technical workshops, training sessions, and safety gap assessments.
• Serve as a trusted technical advisor to customers, leading technical discussions and providing guidance on safety development activities.
• Support safety-related activities across embedded software, hardware, and system development efforts.
• Limited travel may be required to support client engagements, workshops, and assessments.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 5+ years of experience in automotive functional safety.
• Strong working knowledge of ISO 26262 and the functional safety lifecycle.
• Hands-on experience in embedded software, electronic system, hardware, or product development.
• Experience developing functional safety work products, including HARA, safety concepts, safety requirements, FMEA, and FTA.
• Ability to independently lead technical discussions with customers and engineering teams.

• Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

   

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with ADAS, automated driving systems, chassis systems, battery management systems, or electrified vehicle platforms.
• Experience supporting functional safety assessments, audits, or safety case development.
• Familiarity with ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO/PAS 8800, ISO 42001, ISO 21434, IEC 62508 or similar safety standards.
• Consulting or customer-facing engineering experience.

Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. The estimated salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000 USD and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 20% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday and personal days (totaling 12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
