THE OPPORTUNITY
This AI Software Engineer position can work out remotely within the U.S.
AI Software Engineer to work on a Go-based medical device web application and a modern Software as a Service (SaaS) cloud platform aimed at enhancing user health. This role will help improve existing platforms, design and implement cloud-based services, build internal tooling, and bring practical AI capabilities into safe, reliable health-focused products.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Develop and deliver AI-enabled product features, including LLM-powered capabilities, machine-learning models, retrieval-augmented generation, and automation pipelines.
Implement AI solutions that improve internal engineering and quality processes in partnership with Software Quality Assurance and other organizations.
Make implementation-level design decisions within approved AI architecture and tooling, including selecting appropriate libraries, frameworks, and models within established guardrails.
Evaluate day-to-day technical tradeoffs across performance, accuracy, safety, and cost for assigned features, and document the basis for key decisions.
Support the growing AI Ops initiatives at Abbott
Ability to customize large language models for product applications, and knowledgeable in natural language processing and generative AI
Collaborate in scrum activities, including estimation, sprint planning, design discussions, code reviews, testing, and delivery and with product stakeholders to ideate and prove viability of machine learning use cases (Ability to translate business needs and goals into an AI approach and solution, and articulate findings to a non-technical audience)
Effective advanced analytics and AI skills with a foundation in programming (e.g. R, python), database environment (e.g. big-data platforms and SQL skills), and dashboard development (e.g. PowerBI, QlickView)
Assist with deploying models to public cloud infrastructure such as AWS
Partner with technical architects to translate solution designs and architectural intent into working, tested, maintainable code.
Create clear technical documentation and contribute reusable patterns, training materials, and lessons learned to the AI Center of Excellence and other engineering practices.
Communicate risks, dependencies, progress, and technical tradeoffs clearly, and deliver assigned work on schedule.• Leverage company-approved AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle to improve productivity, code quality, testing, documentation, and problem-solving while ensuring compliance with quality, cybersecurity, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
Minimum 6 years of related experience, or a Master's degree with 4+ years of related experience.
Demonstrated experience delivering AI or machine learning solutions into production software products or internal engineering platforms.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to learn quickly, work through ambiguity, accurately estimate work, communicate clearly, collaborate across functions, and deliver results on time.
Hands-on experience with modern AI/ML capabilities, including LLMs, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), model fine-tuning, and supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised learning techniques.
Experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Keras.
Experience with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and collaborative software development in Agile/Scrum environments.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to learn quickly, navigate ambiguity, communicate effectively, collaborate across functions, and deliver results on time.
Deep knowledge of mathematics, probability, statistics, algorithms, and data structures.
Experience using AI-assisted development tools and effectively integrating AI into software engineering workflows while maintaining accountability for technical decisions, code quality, security, and deliverables.
Preferred
Master’s or doctoral degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.
Experience developing medical-device software, digital-health products, or other software within a regulated environment.
Familiarity with model monitoring, MLOps, responsible AI practices, requirements traceability, validation evidence, and risk-aware development.
A customer and product mindset, with the ability to connect technical implementation decisions to user and business outcomes.
