A Day in the Life
The Neurovascular Operating Unit develops technologies that support the treatment of complex neurovascular conditions through minimally invasive and catheter-based therapies. The organization partners across research, engineering, clinical, regulatory, quality, and manufacturing functions to advance products from concept through commercialization while supporting physician training and evidence generation.
This position is based in Irvine, California and is an on-site role. Regular on-site presence is required to support laboratory testing, prototyping, physician evaluations, and collaborative engineering activities. Travel may be required to research facilities, development partners, physician meetings, laboratories, training events, and clinical sites.
As an R&D Engineer I, you will contribute to the development of neurovascular medical device technologies through hands-on engineering, testing, prototyping, and data analysis activities. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers and technical leaders, you will support product development programs from concept evaluation through design verification while gaining experience with medical device development processes, design controls, and engineering best practices.
Primary Responsibilities
Design, prototype, and evaluate medical device concepts, components, and subsystems to support product development objectives.
Plan and execute laboratory, benchtop, and simulation testing to assess product performance and generate technical data.
Analyze experimental results and communicate findings, recommendations, and conclusions to project teams.
Create and maintain engineering documentation including test protocols, reports, specifications, design records, and development summaries.
Participate in product development activities in compliance with Product Development Process (PDP) and Design Controls requirements.
Collaborate with Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, Manufacturing, and Program Management partners to support development milestones and technical decisions.
Support design reviews, risk assessments, root cause investigations, and technical problem-solving activities.
Assist with physician evaluations, laboratory studies, and product development testing activities.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, biomedical, electrical, materials Engineering, or another engineering discipline and 0 to 2 years of engineering experience, including internships, co-ops, academic research, or industry experience.
Hands-on experience with laboratory testing, prototyping, engineering design projects, or product development activities obtained through academic, research, internship, or professional work.
Experience analyzing experimental or engineering data and documenting results in technical reports or presentations.
Ability to create and maintain technical documentation in a structured engineering environment.
Ability to work on-site and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Internship, co-op, research, or industry experience within the medical device, healthcare, biotechnology, or other regulated industries.
Exposure to product development processes, engineering documentation practices, and design controls.
Experience with experimental design, test method development, and data analysis.
Experience using engineering tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), statistical analysis software, or data visualization tools.
Interest in implantable, catheter-based, neurovascular, cardiovascular, or neuromodulation technologies demonstrated through coursework, projects, research, or industry experience.
For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range applies across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and certain locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
