Job Overview
The Civil Litigation Paralegal supports Macy’s in-house litigation team by managing and coordinating the company’s nationwide uninsured litigation docket. The Litigation Paralegal participates in all phases of the litigation process, including case intake, investigation, discovery, trial preparation, appeals, and resolution. Working closely with attorneys, internal business partners, and external stakeholders, the Litigation Paralegal ensures the effective administration, organization, and coordination of litigation matters across the enterprise. This position is based in St. Louis, Missouri.
What You Will Do
- Collect documents, emails, and data, and facilitate document, email, and data productions.
- Organize and maintain case files, documents, and databases, ensuring easy accessibility and accuracy.
- Draft and timely disseminate records preservation notices and email holds and track responses to preservation notices.
- Create fact/document chronologies and production charts.
- Analyze data and present conclusions in charts, spreadsheets, memos, etc.
- Prepare exhibits and other materials for depositions, trials, and arbitrations.
- Assist at trials and arbitrations as needed.
- Strong organizational and time management skills required. Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple assignments.
- Must be able to work collaboratively with a team and autonomously.
- Assist in drafting and reviewing legal documents under attorney supervision.
- Communicate/collaborate with other members of the Law Department and the company, clients, opponents, and other persons in a professional manner.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, and properly handle sensitive client information.
- Conduct and memorialize minor witness interviews.
- Serve as a resource for basic case-related questions.
- Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
- Responsible for performing other duties as necessary.
Skills You Will Need
Litigation Management: Proven ability to support all phases of the litigation process, including case intake, investigation, discovery, trial preparation, arbitration, appeal, and resolution.
Document & Records Management: Experience collecting, organizing, maintaining, and producing legal documents, emails, and data while ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and compliance with legal requirements.
Legal Holds & Preservation: Ability to draft, distribute, and track records preservation notices and legal hold communications to ensure proper retention of evidence and information.
Legal Analysis & Reporting: Strong analytical skills with experience creating fact chronologies, document timelines, production charts, case summaries, spreadsheets, and reports to support litigation strategy.
Trial, Arbitration & Deposition Support: Expertise in preparing exhibits, organizing case materials, coordinating logistics, and assisting attorneys during depositions, trials, and arbitrations.
Case Organization & Prioritization: Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple cases, deadlines, and competing priorities in a fast-paced legal environment.
Legal Document Drafting: Experience drafting, reviewing, and editing legal documents, correspondence, and case-related materials under attorney supervision.
Investigation & Witness Interviews: Ability to conduct and document witness interviews, gather facts, and support investigations through detailed note-taking and information analysis.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Management: Proven ability to work effectively with attorneys, business partners, clients, external counsel, witnesses, and other stakeholders to facilitate case progression.
Confidentiality & Professional Judgment: Strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality, exercising discretion, and handling sensitive legal and business information appropriately.
Technology & Data Management: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, case management systems, document management tools, databases, and litigation support technology.
Communication & Client Service: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to respond professionally to case-related inquiries and provide support to internal and external stakeholders.
Independent & Team-Oriented Work Style: Ability to work autonomously while also collaborating effectively within a legal team to achieve shared goals and meet deadlines.
Who You Are
- Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college or university or paralegal certificate required.
- Minimum of five years’ experience required (bachelor’s degree) / minimum of ten years’ experience required (paralegal certificate only)
- Class action experience preferred.
- Employment and wage-and-hour litigation experience preferred.
- Medium or big-sized law firm experience preferred.
- Must be proficient in Word and Excel. Experience with other Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Microsoft Access) preferred.
- Experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro preferred.
- Experience with legal hold, document/email collection and review, and document/email production software packages preferred.
- Experience with document management systems (iManage, Net Documents, etc.) preferred.
- Experience with legal research applications (LexisNexis, Westlaw) preferred.
- Strong analytical skills required.
- Ability to work a full-time schedule and some overtime based on Law Department and company needs; ability to travel infrequently as needed.
- This role involves performing essential job functions such as communication, collaboration, and use of office and computer systems. Responsibilities include the ability to access and review written and electronic information, and to move within the work environment and interact with workplace materials as needed to carry out job responsibilities.
