Position Summary

This position is located in Abbott Park, IL. The eDiscovery Counsel supports Abbott's global eDiscovery program by partnering with Legal, IT, outside counsel, and vendors to deliver efficient, defensible, and cost-effective discovery solutions. Reporting to the Director, Senior Counsel, eDiscovery and Information Governance, this role advises on eDiscovery strategy, manages complex discovery matters, and helps drive the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of eDiscovery processes, technologies, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise legal teams on eDiscovery strategy, risk, compliance, and best practices across litigation and investigations.
  • Manage all phases of the eDiscovery lifecycle, including legal holds, preservation, collection, review, production, and Early Case Assessment (ECA).
  • Partner with attorneys, paralegals, IT, Information Governance, vendors, and outside counsel to deliver efficient, defensible discovery solutions.
  • Provide strategic guidance on eDiscovery and GenAI tools and processes.
  • Monitor caselaw, GenAI developments, and related implications for discoverable information, ESI protocols, and data retention.
  • Drive process improvement, automation, and standardization across eDiscovery operations and workflows.
  • Oversee eDiscovery vendors, technology platforms, document reviews, and related budgets to optimize performance and cost.
  • Lead implementation and adoption of eDiscovery technologies and support cross-functional integration efforts.
  • Monitor legal hold compliance, reporting, metrics, and program effectiveness.
  • Deliver training and guidance on eDiscovery tools, processes, and industry best practices.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 3-5+ years in litigation, eDiscovery, and technologies (such as GenAI) with an understanding of systems, and processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and influence across global organizations.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (required)
  • J.D. (required) with membership in a state bar

Desired Experience / Training:

  • Strong knowledge of the eDiscovery lifecycle, including legal holds, preservation, collections, review, production, and ECA.
  • Experience with eDiscovery analytics and review technologies, including GenAI tools (e.g., M365 Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude), predictive coding, TAR, CAL, and related methodologies.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills, capable of influencing across the organization, and managing projects under tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with forensic collections, data preservation requirements, and alternative data sources, including mobile devices, messaging platforms, and social media.
  • Working knowledge of leading eDiscovery platforms, including Everlaw, Relativity, Nuix, Exterro, Brainspace, and similar technologies.
  • Strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving abilities with the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a challenging environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to process improvement, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration.

Work Environment

  • Duties are performed in a professional office environment and require regular use of a computer and standard office equipment.
  • Occasional work outside normal business hours may be required.

The base pay for this position is

$129,300.00 – $258,700.00

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
