The Ophthalmic Technician participates in the care of patients in a clinic setting. In this role, you will greet patients and explain what they can expect during their appointment. You will escort patients to the exam room and perform diagnostic ophthalmic tests and procedures prior to the physician seeing the patient, including visual acuity, tonometry, and lensometry.

The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for accurately documenting patient information and updating charts and medical records. This role also helps maintain a clean and organized clinic environment, including cleaning and sterilizing equipment and treatment areas.

Schedule

  • 1st, 3rd & 5th Mondays: Morning only
  • 2nd & 4th Mondays: All day
  • 1st, 3rd & 5th Tuesdays: Morning only
  • 2nd & 4th Tuesdays: Off
  • 1st, 3rd & 5th Wednesdays: All day
  • 2nd & 4th Wednesdays: Morning only
  • Every Thursday: Afternoon
  • Every Friday: Morning, except the 2nd Friday of each month, which would be afternoon

What You Will Be Doing

  • Interact with patients to accurately gather information and enter it into the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Proactively communicate with patients about what to expect during their visit, including any delays or changes.
  • Document the patient's chief complaint, present illness, and past medical history.
  • Accurately record patient information in the EMR according to established standards and physician requirements.
  • Perform diagnostic testing, including assessing visual acuity, eye muscle function, pupil size and reactivity, tonometry, lensometry, and other ophthalmic testing.
  • Administer eye drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate the eyes as directed.
  • Assist with minor surgical procedures, intraocular injections, and laser treatments in exam or treatment rooms, including preparing patients for sterile procedures.
  • Educate patients on medication administration and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physicians.
  • Scribe for physicians as needed.
  • Protect patient information and maintain confidentiality by accurately completing and safeguarding medical records and following all HIPAA requirements.
  • Use effective problem-solving skills to respectfully and efficiently de-escalate patient concerns.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and ocular medications.
  • Stay current with ophthalmic technologies and medications and answer general patient questions within the scope of the role.
  • Assist team members and complete other projects as requested.

What You Know

Required

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Desired

  • Electronic Medical Records (EMR) experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ophthalmic or healthcare experience is a plus.

Experience

  • Entry-level candidates are welcome to apply.
  • Typical experience: 0–3 years.
