PATH Station Trainee

Responsibilities:

A Trainee is an employee in training for journey-level work as a Carpenter, Plumber, Mason, Fire Marshal and/or Painter.  Trainees assist in the maintenance, repair and installation of structures and equipment to include locks, doors, floors, walls, handrails, roofs, piping systems for water supplies, bathroom fixtures, and waste drains. Trainees also inspect roof drains at various locations throughout the PATH system. Trainees also assist in masonry repair on stairs, sidewalks, block and brick walls and perform demolition with a jackhammer and/or power and hand tools. The Trainee also paints PATH and tenant occupied areas, corridors and stations. Graduate Trainees will be assigned to perform journey-level carpentry, plumbing, painting and masonry work depending on operational needs. Successful candidates will also be expected to become proficient in the Fire Marshal craft and be willing and able to carry full fire extinguishers over uneven terrain and for long periods. Support in snow removal and adverse weather response is required.

Training Program:

For the duration of the training program (currently one year), the trainees will not be considered for employment in any other position at PATH. At PATH’s discretion and based on the skill level of the incoming class, PATH may require candidates to attend classroom training and practical training in addition to the regular on-the-job training provided in the program. All trainees will be trained in Carpentry, Masonry, Plumbing, and Painting. On-the-job training may include (but are not limited to) the following topic areas:

Plumbing:

• Cutting and threading galvanized and black pipe
• Soldering copper pipe and fittings
• Installing various plumbing fixtures
• Working with scaffolds and ladders

Carpentry:

• Constructing and framing walls
• Installing floors, doors and windows
• Repairing roof leaks
• Repairing and installing locks
• Repairing and installing stair treads

Masonry:

• Building and repairing concrete masonry unit (CMU) and concrete walls, stairs, and sidewalks
• Laying out, forming and pouring concrete
• Repairing and installing ceramic tile

Painting:

• Selecting and safely operating spray gun, rollers, and paint type when painting Stations, Offices, Buildings
• Protecting floors, equipment, and trains using tarps and tape prior to painting
• Safely erects and works with scaffolds and ladders

Fire Marshal

• Filling and distributing water extinguishers
• Recording and inspecting AED’s.
• Inspection of FSP Siamese connections and logging in inspections

Qualifications:

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

•  High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
•  Two years (2) experience in the building maintenance and/or construction field.
•  Valid driver’s license

Selected qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a in the assessment process which consists of a written exam and practical exam.

Written Exam: The written test is designed to measure knowledge of Basic Tool and Materials Usage in all aspects of the Facility Construction and Maintenance trades including: Carpentry, Painting, Plumbing, Masonry, Fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance etc; Tool Identification and Safety Procedures for these trades; Trade Math including: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals, and calculation of measurements based on the reading of blueprints and rulers.

Practical Exam: Constructing a piping project from a drawing by cutting and threading steel pipe and cutting and sweating copper pipe; building a wood frame using standard lumber following the specifications from a shop drawing; measuring, cutting, hanging, taping and painting a sheetrock wall following a shop drawing; safely climbing an extension ladder while carrying tools. Carrying charged fire extinguishers both up and down Caisson I stairs.

The Hourly Salary for Station Trainee is $35.69 per hour.

Station Trainee starts at Step I - (per union contract) and get step increases.
