About the Role

General Motors is seeking a Radar Hardware Development Engineer Intern to support the development and evaluation of advanced radar hardware for next-generation vehicle safety and automated-driving capabilities. You will gain hands-on experience with radar electronics, RF signal chains, sensor architecture, hardware bring-up, laboratory testing, vehicle integration, and validation.

Working with experienced hardware engineers, the Munich radar team, and cross-functional partners across GM, you will contribute to design reviews, bench testing, troubleshooting, data analysis, and technical documentation for complex automotive sensing systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support radar hardware development through requirements review, interface definition, design reviews, verification, validation, and issue tracking.
  • Assist with reviews of schematics, PCB layouts, RF front ends, antennas, signal chains, power, embedded compute, thermal behavior, diagnostics, and hardware interfaces.
  • Set up and execute bench, laboratory, environmental, simulation, and vehicle-integration tests using appropriate instrumentation and documented procedures.
  • Support hardware bring-up and troubleshooting by taking measurements, analyzing results, reproducing issues, and documenting root-cause findings.
  • Evaluate engineering data to assess hardware and sensor performance, identify trends, and support design or corrective-action decisions.
  • Assist with investigations involving signal integrity, power, thermal performance, electromagnetic compatibility, reliability, interfaces, and other hardware behaviors.
  • Collaborate with firmware, embedded software, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, supplier, and vehicle-integration teams to resolve issues and assess design maturity.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including requirements, design decisions, test results, validation evidence, risk assessments, issue logs, and lessons learned.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, systems engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Available for an engineering internship or co-op during the applicable term.
  • Coursework, project, research, or laboratory experience in electronics, RF engineering, radar, antennas, signal processing, embedded systems, circuit design, or automotive systems.
  • Familiarity with circuits, technical requirements, hardware interfaces, testing, measurement, debugging, and data analysis.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, or a similar scripting or analysis environment.
  • Ability to interpret basic schematics, technical requirements, test procedures, or engineering drawings.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to learn quickly, ask effective technical questions, and work hands-on in laboratory or test environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with radar hardware, RF systems, antennas, mixed-signal electronics, embedded compute, power management, or related sensing technologies.
  • Must be graduating between December 2027 and June 2028
  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship.
  • Familiarity with schematic capture, PCB layout or review, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, or other electronic test equipment.
  • Exposure to hardware/software interface debugging, signal integrity, power integrity, thermal analysis, electromagnetic compatibility, reliability testing, or failure-mode analysis.
  • Familiarity with automotive network interfaces, embedded systems, hardware-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, or vehicle testing.
  • Experience contributing to technical projects with distributed teams and an interest in radar, advanced-driver-assistance systems, automated driving, robotics, or automotive electronics.

Compensation:

  • The monthly salary range for this role is $8,100 – $8,700 per month
  • GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program.
