Job Description

The Role:

Support the Chevrolet IndyCar Program by turning race, telemetry, timing, scoring, and track data into reliable analysis and decision support. The intern will work with Drew Bennison and the Race Strategy & Analytics team to prepare data, test analytical tools, evaluate model outputs, and communicate findings that help improve race-weekend execution.

The Team: 

The Motorsports Competition analytics team develops practical tools for race strategy and performance improvement across road courses, street circuits, ovals, and superspeedways. The team partners with race engineers, strategists, Chevrolet teams, Ilmor, GM engineering groups, and data/software specialists to make better decisions throughout testing, race events, and the offseason.

What You’ll Do:   

• Assist with collecting, cleaning, organizing, and validating IndyCar race, telemetry, timing, scoring, fuel, tire, and track data.
• Support back-testing, scenario analysis, and basic simulation of race-strategy recommendations.
• Help evaluate model inputs and outputs related to fuel usage, tire performance, cautions, pit cycles, track position, and remaining-race conditions.
• Maintain track configuration data, timing lines, pit segments, logical segments, and related documentation.
• Create clear charts, summaries, dashboards, and technical documentation for engineering and competition stakeholders.
• Support software and data-engineering tasks such as testing workflows, checking APIs or data pipelines, documenting defects, and verifying fixes.
• Participate in race-replay reviews and help compare model recommendations with actual race outcomes.
• Learn and apply disciplined practices for version control, testing, data quality, and communicating analytical assumptions.

Required Qualifications:    

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas:
    • Engineering
    • Data Science
    • Statistics
  • Must be graduating between December 2027 and May 2029
  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week during the summer months

Preferred Qualifications:   

• Experience with Python, SQL, data visualization, or statistical analysis
• Familiarity with Git, APIs, databases, cloud analytics, or software testing
• Coursework or project experience involving simulation, optimization, machine learning, or time-series data
• Interest in motorsports, vehicle performance, race engineering, or other high-performance technical environments
• Strong problem-solving, communication, organization, and technical writing skills
• Ability to work collaboratively while also completing well-defined tasks independently

Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to the Charlotte Technical Center three times per week, at minimum.
