Role Summary
Join General Motors as an Engineering Designer – Electrical, where you will play a key role in developing innovative electrical systems and components for GM vehicles. In this position, you will use advanced Siemens NX modeling tools, virtual integration methods, and data management systems to create high-quality, manufacturable designs that support GM’s Global Vehicle Development Process.
You will collaborate with electrical engineers, design release engineers, manufacturing partners, and cross-functional teams to develop and release electrical components, harnesses, routing solutions, brackets, enclosures, and related vehicle systems from concept through production and lifecycle support.
Job Responsibilities
Develop virtual vehicle integration solutions for electrical systems and components in alignment with program requirements, electrical architecture, packaging constraints, and fundamental design principles.
Create and refine NX math models, criteria, typical sections, routing layouts, and virtual integration data in accordance with standard modeling and documentation methods.
Support the Global Vehicle Development Process, including design sync points, virtual reviews, build events, validation activities, and release timing.
Apply electrical design theory and principles to complete higher-level assignments with limited supervision.
Provide solutions to non-routine, moderately complex electrical design, packaging, routing, and virtual integration issues.
Coordinate electrical clearance, routing, serviceability, and usage studies from the component level through complete-vehicle integration, including configuration and variant validation.
Design and integrate electrical components and subsystems such as wiring harnesses, connectors, terminals, sensors, control modules, power distribution components, brackets, channels, and protective coverings.
Apply manufacturability, design for assembly, serviceability, ergonomics, environmental durability, and integration considerations to electrical component and subsystem designs.
Participate in—and when appropriate, lead—electrical design, packaging, virtual integration, and cross-functional reviews.
Document and maintain material, mass, specification, interface, and configuration data within the math file and applicable engineering systems.
Complete NX analysis for assigned electrical components and subsystems, including clearance, interference, routing, motion, and accessibility studies; apply results with support from the Design Lead Team or Senior Designers as needed.
Collaborate closely with electrical engineers, design release engineers, manufacturing, supplier partners, and fellow designers to meet product requirements, quality expectations, and program timing.
Support fellow designers with electrical design tasks, component requirements, modeling standards, and virtual integration needs.
Stay current on electrical product developments, vehicle technologies, design tools, and emerging design practices.
Share lessons learned and recommend updates to electrical design standards, modeling methods, and best practices.
Create math models and virtual layouts for complex electrical components, assemblies, and vehicle subsystems.
Communicate proactively with the Design Manager, Design Lead Team, and Design Release Engineer regarding timing, status, risks, and technical concerns.
Ensure high-quality, on-time math and design releases for assigned electrical components and subsystems.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
At least 5 years of experience in automotive electrical design, CAD, virtual integration, electrical packaging, or a related engineering design discipline.
Proficiency in Siemens NX and parametric modeling, including the creation and modification of 3D math models and assemblies.
Strong understanding of electrical component integration, harness routing, packaging, clearances, interfaces, and configuration management.
Working knowledge of GD&T, design for manufacturability, design for assembly, serviceability, and subsystem integration.
Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, component specifications, and engineering requirements.
Strong communication, problem-solving, organization, and collaboration skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments, meet program timing, and work effectively with limited supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing or integrating vehicle wiring harnesses, connectors, terminals, sensors, control modules, power distribution components, or electrical enclosures.
Experience with electrical routing, packaging, clearance analysis, and virtual vehicle integration in Siemens NX.
Knowledge of automotive electrical standards, EMC/EMI considerations, grounding, shielding, sealing, and environmental protection.
Experience with supplier collaboration, manufacturing processes, prototype builds, validation events, or production launch support.
Experience using product lifecycle management, requirements management, or engineering data management systems.
Master’s degree in Engineering.
