About Carrier Johnson + Culture

At Carrier Johnson + Culture (CJ+C), we believe exceptional design is achieved through collaboration, innovation, and disciplined execution. Our interdisciplinary teams create transformative environments that strengthen communities and enrich the human experience. Our portfolio includes multifamily residential, mixed-use, hospitality, workplace, civic, higher education, and commercial projects throughout California and beyond.

We are seeking an Interior Designer / Job Captain who combines strong design sensibility, graphic communication, and technical capability to help deliver thoughtful, well-resolved interior environments from design development through construction.

Your Role

As an Interior Designer / Job Captain at CJ+C, you will work collaboratively with interior designers, architects, project managers, consultants, and technical leaders to translate design vision into coordinated, buildable interior environments.

With 4–7 years of professional experience, you will take ownership of assigned projects and project areas, independently advancing interior design documentation while maintaining design intent, technical accuracy, and project quality. You will contribute across design development, construction documentation, and construction administration, with the ability to drive your scope forward with limited day-to-day oversight.

This role requires an interior designer who is equally comfortable developing compelling design presentations and working through the technical resolution and documentation required to bring those ideas to reality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and produce comprehensive Design Development and Construction Document packages for interior architecture and design scopes.
  • Independently develop and coordinate interior plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, details, finish plans, schedules, millwork, and related documentation.
  • Translate design concepts into technically resolved, coordinated, and buildable solutions while maintaining the integrity of the design vision.
  • Coordinate interior design requirements with architecture, engineering, specialty consultants, and contractors.
  • Research, select, document, and coordinate materials, finishes, fixtures, and interior systems appropriate to project design, performance, budget, and schedule.
  • Apply a strong working knowledge of interior detailing, construction methods, accessibility requirements, and applicable building codes.
  • Identify and resolve coordination issues proactively throughout project development.
  • Support construction administration, including review of submittals, RFIs, finish samples, and field conditions as appropriate.
  • Develop clear, visually compelling presentations and design materials that effectively communicate design intent to clients and project teams.
  • Maintain drawing quality, graphic consistency, technical accuracy, and documentation standards across assigned scopes.
  • Manage assigned priorities and deliverables while communicating effectively with project leadership and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Contribute to the continued development of CJ+C's integrated interiors practice and design culture.

Your Qualifications

  • 4–7 years of professional interior design experience, ideally within an interior design-focused practice or design-forward architecture firm.
  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and producing comprehensive DD and CD packages, with the ability to independently execute a well-coordinated interiors drawing set.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit, with working proficiency in Bluebeam and Miro.
  • Strong graphic design and visual communication skills, with the ability to create high-quality, visually compelling presentations and design materials.
  • Strong understanding of interior detailing, materials and finishes, construction methods, accessibility requirements, and applicable building codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage consultant coordination, technical documentation, code and accessibility requirements, and drawing package quality throughout project development.
  • Project experience in multifamily housing, hospitality, and/or higher education is preferred.
  • Ability to take ownership of assigned projects and project areas and coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams with limited day-to-day oversight.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple priorities while maintaining design intent, technical accuracy, quality, and project deadlines.
  • NCIDQ certification or progress toward certification is a plus.
