Summary
You will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic . This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition at management's discretion. WG9 - 32.19 (Step 1) - 37.61 (Step 5) First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.
Duties
Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Support carpentry requirements at the center that include installing, modifying, and repair ing framed structures, interior partitions, dry-wall systems, and specialized field/lab items; operate modern shop equipment and power tools safely. Perform grounds maintenance (mowing, fertilizing, irrigation), operate heavy equipment (chainsaws, mowers, excavators, skid steers), construct and repair facility fencing, and execute winter safety operations (snow removal). Diagnose, install, and repair plumbing systems. This includes maintaining and repairing specialized laboratory water distribution equipment. Conduct routine heating and air conditioning system maintenance. Monitor, test, and maintain building automation, HVAC, and electrical systems; perform preventive and corrective maintenance; conduct minor electrical troubleshooting and repairs; install and replace electrical components. Operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment; conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on the center's fleet; diagnose and replace vehicle components. Operate, launch, and maintain research watercraft; perform maintenance on boats, motors, and trailers.
Requirements

Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated. Qualifications and evaluation

Physical Demands: Work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the incumbent may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally exceed 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area may be dirty, wet, dusty and greasy and have inadequate lighting, heat or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, insect bites, exposure to or inhalation of harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves or eye goggles. Incumbent enters biological containment areas on occasions and follows required precautions (such as wearing a respirator). Personal protective equipment is provided. The worker may be called in for mandatory overtime during weather events or major equipment failure. Position may require that the incumbent some weekends, evenings, and nights. The incumbent is required to respond to emergency call back during evenings and holidays within 1 hour of being notified by the facilities security/alarm monitoring service.
