A Day In The Life Of A Utility Construction Laborer

As a crucial member of our field crew on the UDOT Zion Canyon Fiber Optic Project, you will support utility conduit installation across the region. Every day brings hands-on variety-from performing manual hand digging and setting junction boxes to placing fiber optic infrastructure.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting field crews with utility conduit installation, plowing, trenching, and directional drilling operations.
  • Acting as a dedicated safety spotter for heavy equipment operators to ensure a secure job site.
  • Safely moving materials, tools, and supplies across the work area.
  • Setting junction boxes and completing manual hand digging when required.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively with equipment operators and site leads.

Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Ability to consistently lift and carry 50+ lbs in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to read/understand basic site drawings or plans.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills for maintaining site safety alongside heavy equipment operators.
  • Willingness to undertake heavy travel along the project corridor.
