The Building Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of building systems and infrastructure.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on, technically skilled professional who takes pride in maintaining a high performing facility and providing excellent customer service. This position requires strong knowledge of commercial building systems, the ability to troubleshoot complex equipment, and the judgment to respond effectively to both routine maintenance needs and emergency situations.
The Building Engineer will work closely with Engineering Management, building occupants, vendors, contractors, and other departments to ensure the facility operates safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable codes, regulations, and organizational standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Building Engineer Primary Duties:
Building Systems & Equipment
Operate, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot major building systems, including:
HVAC systems
Chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and air-handling systems
Boilers and heating systems
Building Automation Systems (BAS)
Electrical distribution and emergency power systems
Lighting and controls
Plumbing and domestic water systems
Fire/life-safety systems
Elevators and other vertical transportation systems
Access control and other facility-related systems
Monitor building operating conditions and respond to equipment alarms and system abnormalities
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with established procedures and schedules
Diagnose mechanical, electrical, controls, and HVAC problems and determine appropriate corrective action
Maintain accurate equipment readings, logs, maintenance records, and work orders
Identify developing equipment problems and proactively recommend repairs or improvements before failures occur
Preventive Maintenance & Reliability
Complete assigned preventive maintenance activities safely, accurately, and on schedule.
Inspect equipment and identify deficiencies, safety concerns, and potential failures.
Coordinate with contractors and service providers for specialized maintenance and repairs.
Verify completed work and ensure equipment is returned to proper operating condition.
Customer Service
Provide professional and responsive service to building occupants and internal customers.
Respond to maintenance requests and work orders in a timely manner.
Communicate clearly with customers regarding building issues, expected timelines, and completed work.
Emergency Response
Respond to building emergencies, equipment failures, alarms, power outages, water leaks, HVAC failures, and other facility-related incidents.
Troubleshoot problems under time-sensitive conditions and take appropriate action to protect people, equipment, and the facility.
Participate in emergency response procedures, drills, and after-hours/on-call responsibilities as required.
Additional Duties:
Assists Senior Engineer and/or works with other engineers in installing, operating, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment and components of the following systems:
Work with contractors and vendors to coordinate maintenance, repairs, testing, commissioning, and construction activities
Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with safety requirements, specifications, and building procedures
Maintains a high level of cleanliness in all work areas, such as electrical and mechanical spaces, building services shops, cubicles and storage locations
Responds to Bank employees and other building staff needs through service requests and project assignments, such as temperature adjustments, calibrations, light and plumbing fixture repairs, electrical circuit modifications, installation of carpet tiles, lock and door hardware
Maintain a strong safety culture and actively promote safe work practices among coworkers and contractors
Performs other duties as assigned
Sr. Building Engineer Additional Primary Duties:
Same duties listed above for Building engineer
Troubleshoot multiple building systems
Perform repair and installations of major equipment and building systems such as air compressors, fans, package units, pumps, piping and electrical conduit.
Acts as SME for all systems in Bank. Provides knowledge and expertise for design and upgrade projects
Creates MOP’s and training guides for major building systems including training of staff in all areas
Acts as Project Manager for a variety of upgrades and repairs
Involved in all major building modifications providing input and construction administration
Provides input on Project completion and identifies areas improvement for all engineering work
Building Engineer Qualifications:
High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
Typically, 5-6 years of related experience
Experience working in a large commercial, high-rise, mission-critical, institutional, or industrial facility
Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and schematics
Basic to intermediate level proficiency in using MS Office Suite (email, Word, and Excel)
Ability to apply sound troubleshooting logic to determine root causes
Understanding and operating Building Automation Systems
Experience with CMMS/work-order management systems
Experience working with generators, UPS systems, switchgear, and emergency power systems
Experience with chillers, cooling towers, air-handling units, pumps, VFDs, and hydronic systems
Electrical troubleshooting experience
EPA 608 certification (Preferred)
Sr. Building Engineer Additional Qualifications:
Should possess all the qualifications listed above for Building engineer
Typically, 6+ years of related experience
Certification in trades preferred for this level
Must have advanced ability to diagnose plumbing issues
Ability to develop, review, and modify scopes of work for small to large projects
Ability to provide project management and construction oversight for small to medium sized projects
Advanced knowledge of Building Automation System, i.e. Metasys and Automated Logic
WORKING CONDITIONS
May be required to work around operating machinery with electrical components and moving parts; high degree of concentration is necessary
BASE SALARY RANGE:
Building Engineer: Min: 69,300 MID: 90,100 MAX: 110,700
Sr. Building Engineer: Min: 82,600 MID: 107,300 MAX: 131,900
Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographic and other market data.
