Summary
You will serve as an Archeologist at the Katmai National Park & Preserve in King Salmon, Alaska. Please visit find a park for additional park information. This is a Permanent, Competitive, Full-time, Career-Seasonal appointment. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.
Duties
This position serves as a cultural resources specialist and compliance coordinator for Katmai National Park and Preserve, Aniakchak Monument and Alagnak Wild River. During high/summer season (May-September) much of the work is conducted in a field environment. At the full performance level (GS-11) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Serving as cultural resource compliance coordinator for park's projects Acting as Crew Chief and overseeing fieldwork and data collection activities. Inventorying and monitoring the condition of cultural resources and compliance projects in areas impacted by construction and visitor activities. Performing archeological surveys, test excavations, laboratory processing and analysis of artifacts recovered. Providing historical and archeological information to visitors. Managing archeological collections according to established museum procedures. Preparing detailed field notes and records, daily logs and journals, photographs and photo logs, archeological and architectural forms, feature and artifact drawings. Preparing monthly progress reports and a final seasonal report with the assistance of field staff. Using and overseeing the use of GPS, GIS and other computer software in support of data collection and reporting activities.
Requirements
Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service. You must be at least 18 years of age or older and possess a valid state driver's license to operate government vehicles. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Qualifications and evaluation

Career-Seasonal: These are appointments that are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. When operational needs and/or funds are not available, the employee will be placed in non-pay status. Placement in non-pay status will not be on a sporadic, occasional, or unplanned basis. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. You will work approximately 24 pay periods, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Non-pay status is anticipated to be: Nov 01-16, 2027. COLA: An additional 3% cost of living allowance (COLA) will be added to salary. COLA is subject to annual review and adjustment. Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, fire lines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is possible. Ethics: All Department of Interior (DOI) employees, their spouses, and minor children may not acquire or retain any claim, permit, lease, small tract entry, or other rights granted by the Department in Federal lands, with limited exceptions.
