Duties
The primary duties involve the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment used in the operation of a national cemetery. Equipment maintained incudes pickup trucks, dump trucks, back hoes, tractors, riding and push mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, and similar equipment. Position also includes Cemetery Caretaker duties as assigned. These duties include interment and grounds maintenance operations. Incumbent may also apply a working knowledge of a variety of trades such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting and masonry. Operates, uses test equipment and tools such as wrenches, sockets, brake tools, pliers, screwdrivers, etc. Performs maintenance repair work on automotive type vehicles and a wide variety of engineering and grounds equipment. Vehicles and equipment (gas and diesel) include but not limited to: 2 ton dump trucks up to 30,000 GVWR sedans, panel and pick-up trucks -5 tons, industrial tractors and back hoes up to 16 tons and 115hp, heavy frontend loader, various mowing machines (riding and walking), ditching machine, forklift, compressors, generators, powered trimmers and shears, and various towed equipment. Incumbent will be required to assist automotive mechanic in the performance of the Fleet manager duties. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.
