POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Fire Chief and Fire Marshal, performs professional and technical work in fire prevention, code enforcement, plan review, public education, and fire investigation. The Deputy Fire Marshal assists with the administration and implementation of the City’s fire prevention program and may act on behalf of the Fire Marshal when assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the guidance and supervision of the Fire Marshal, the Deputy Fire Marshal shall perform the following essential functions:
- Reviews and approves commercial/residential site and building plans to verify compliance with applicable fire and life-safety codes, standards, and City requirements. Coordinates plan reviews with Building Department personnel and other City staff to determine applicable fire and life-safety review requirements.
- Reviews/ approves plans for fire suppression, fire alarm and detection, life-safety, and related electrical or mechanical systems.
- Reviews hazardous materials (HAZMAT) permit applications and conducts required HAZMAT inspections.
- Schedules and conducts field inspections for new construction, existing occupancies, tenant improvements, remodels, and other regulated activities.
- Inspects fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, fixed fire-extinguishing systems, engineered smoke-control systems, and other fire prevention and protection systems.
- Provides support, guidance, and training to Fire Department personnel to promote consistent fire inspection and code-enforcement practices.
- Responds to complaints and investigates potential fire and life-safety code violations.
- Meets with property owners, tenants, contractors, design professionals, and other stakeholders to review and explain code requirements and compliance options.
- Issues warnings, correction notices, or other enforcement documentation as authorized to obtain code compliance.
- Establishes and maintains accurate records of inspections, complaints, investigations, permits, notices, plan reviews, and other fire prevention activities.
- Testifies and presents evidence in court and/or administrative hearings as required.
- Assists in recommending and developing fire prevention policies, procedures, standards, and code amendments.
- Coordinates fire prevention activities with other City departments, local, county, state, and federal agencies, as appropriate.
- Responds to incidents for investigation when available or requested.
- May act as the Fire Marshal in the Fire Marshal’s absence or as assigned.
- Maintains Fire Inspector vehicle assigned during work hours
- Maintain issued PPE and any investigations equipment.
- Conducts business licensing fire inspections
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education –
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate degree or higher in fire science or a related field; will consider experience and certification in place of degree.
- Experience –
- Six (6) years of full-time experience as a firefighter, fire inspector, or in a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- License and Certification –
- Must possess current Utah Fire Inspector I certification and ICC Fire Inspector I certification.
- Must obtain ICC Fire Inspector II certification within two (2) years of the date of hire.
- Must possess current Utah Fire Investigator certification and NFA Fire Investigator certification, or obtain the required fire investigator certification(s) within one (1) year of the date of hire.
- Must possess, and maintain a valid state driver’s license which will maintain an acceptable driving record. Driving records may be checked in all 50 states.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of –
- fire prevention and code enforcement, suppression methods, departmental policies and procedures, and applicable building, fire, electrical, and related codes and standards. Skill in the use of word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, records-management, and other standard computer and office applications.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that an employee may encounter while successfully performing the essential functions of this position.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to lift or carry 25-50 pounds; stand and walk on even, uneven, or rough surfaces; twist or turn; reach from waist to shoulder height; and hold or grasp firefighting tools and equipment. The employee is occasionally required to lift or carry 50-100 pounds; run; sit; drive; balance; work at heights; climb stairs or ladders; bend or stoop; crouch or squat; crawl; kneel; work in awkward positions; reach overhead or toward the floor; and use fine motor skills and foot controls.
Work is performed in office, vehicle, indoor, and outdoor settings and may occur in all weather conditions and temperature extremes, during both daytime and nighttime hours. Work may be performed in emergency and stressful situations. The employee may be exposed to alarms and hazards associated with fire and emergency scenes, including bodily fluids, smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, solvents, and oils. Work assignments may be broad and performed with limited supervision. The position may work a schedule of four 10-hour days and is subject to emergency call-back and on-call responsibilities.
The employee may occasionally work near moving mechanical equipment or in elevated or precarious locations and may be exposed to wet or humid conditions, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical hazards, and vibration. Noise levels are generally quiet in an office setting and may be loud at emergency or inspection scenes.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Tuesday to Friday up to 40 hours per week. 4/10 schedule
- Salary range: $28.67-$47.82 (Starting wage is dependent on experience.)
