Summary

As an Industrial Hygienist at Glenn Research Center or Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility, you will develop, implement, and maintain Center-level environmental and occupational health programs and oversee compliance with Federal, State, NASA, and Agency requirements. Positions are located in various organizations, and NASA may fill positions at any of the grade levels listed in this announcement: GS-11/12/13/14.

Duties

Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Maintains oversight of Federal regulatory and Agency-level requirements; develops, implements, and maintains Center-level IH/HP and Occupational Health programs to ensure compliance and provide a safe workplace. Provides services for Center compliance with hazardous materials management and chemical use restrictions in accordance with the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and ensures proper implementation of the hazardous materials information tracking. Coordinates with the occupational medical clinic and employee assistance programs for the Center to ensure compliance to medical surveillance of NASA and regulatory requirements. Serves as a technical lead responsible for oversight and coordination of the Center's Industrial Hygiene programs, including exposure assessments, hazard evaluations, occupational health, regulatory compliance, and emergency response. Represents the Center on NASA agency working groups (IH/EH, HP, Food Safety, Ergonomics, and the agency’s hazardous materials) and advisory panels to include the NASA Institutional Safety and Health Board. Performs inspections for the food sanitation program for the Center. Coordinates the development, selection, and oversight of Government-provided Environmental and Occupational Health services, ensuring regulatory and policy requirements are captured in contractor Performance Work Statements.

Under NASA's category rating process, applicants will be assessed on the position competencies and placed in one of three categories identified and defined below: Best Qualified Category - Applicants who demonstrate a superior level of all evaluation criteria. Highly Qualified Category - Applicants who demonstrate a satisfactory level of the evaluation criteria. Qualified Category - Applicants who demonstrate the basic qualifications, with general knowledge, skills, and abilities. Candidates within the Best Qualified category who are eligible for veteran preference will receive selection priority over non-veteran preference eligibles. Education

Basic Requirements: You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. OR Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree that included a major in engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. OR Have a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). U.S. degrees must have been awarded from colleges or universities that are accredited by recognized accrediting organizations. For a list of schools that meet this criteria, go to http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs. These education credentials must be deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
