Duties
As a Student Trainee (Administrative Support), your typical work assignments may include: Establishing and maintaining office files. Receiving incoming calls and visitors. Providing callers and visitors with general information. Preparing a variety of standardized documents from rough draft and/or oral instructions. Processing and distributing mail to appropriate individuals. Developing documents using a variety of office automation applications. Performing special projects. As a Pathways Student Trainee at the NIH, you will be engaged in projects/tasks related to your position and program area. The NIH Institute will share further information on the structure and content of the program with you during the interview process. This announcement can be used to fill a variety of administrative positions such as: Auditor, Accountant, Human Resources Assistant, Human Resources Specialist, Program Specialist, Extramural Support Assistant, Program Support Assistant, Administrative Technician, Administrative Officer, Management/Program Analyst, Budget Analyst, Engineer, Purchasing Agent, Property Management Specialist, Ethics Program Assistant, Grants Management Specialist, and/or IT Specialist.
Qualifications and evaluation
You will be evaluated based on how well you meet the qualifications listed in this vacancy announcement. Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your application materials (e.g., resume, supporting documents) and your responses to the assessments required for this position. How You Will Be Evaluated To be considered well qualified for the purposes of the Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) and the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP), you must be able to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry and substantively exceed the basic qualifications by scoring at least an 80 on the assessment and meet all eligibility, physical, medical, suitability, and all other requirements.
Education

If your transcript does not yet reflect your Fall 2026 enrollment, submit separate enrollment verification with your application. This position is designated as a "non-emergency/teleworker" position and the selected candidate will be considered a "non-emergency/teleworker" employee. In the event of a closure, you must be available to telework or request leave Non-competitive conversion may be made to either a one-grade or two-grade interval position, depending on the agency's policy. An individual participating in the Internship Program who otherwise meets the Program requirements for conversion (i.e., work hours, satisfactory performance, educational requirements, training completed, etc.) may be converted to a position that has an established career ladder. Promotion potential is determined based on the position being filled within an Institute/Center. Student Trainees must work 480 hours prior to graduation in order to be eligible for conversion to the competitive service. While conversion is not guaranteed, NIH Student Trainees may be converted to a career-conditional appointment within 180 days of successful completion of all program requirements as specified by the Pathways Participant Agreement. A one-year trial period may be required upon selection/placement. Applicants under 18 years of age will require a work permit prior to appointment. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required throughout the duration of the program. Student Trainees and their supervisors must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement which outlines expectations for the internship prior to entrance on duty. Veterans' Preference only applies to HHS Priority Reemployment List (PRL) Eligibles.
