A Day in the Life

Position Description

Responsible for developing and maintaining systems for insuring Quality of products produced by manufacturing processes in machining, metal finishing and assembly. Initiates improvements in current Quality systems to improve part quality, schedule performance and to reduce manufacturing costs by applying standard work by mentoring others and establishing best practices.

A Day in the Life

• Conducts print reviews with R&D team propose and make necessary changes to ensure proper inspection system method, capability, and product manufacturability 

• Recommends design or test methods and statistical process control procedures for achieving required levels of product reliability  

• Reviews engineering drawing changes and makes/initiates appropriate changes in gauging and inspection procedures when dictated by engineering drawing changes. Documents all changes through the Manufacturing Engineering process control system. 

• Develops, coordinates and conducts technical reliability studies and evaluations of engineering design concepts and design of experiments (DOE) constructs 

• Completes risk analysis studies of new design and processes and Utilizes PFMEA tools to perform process improvements 

• Compiles and analyzes performance reports and process control statistics; investigates and analyzes relevant variables potentially affecting product and processes

• Ensures that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards

• Analyzes preliminary plans and develops reliability engineering programs to achieve company, customer and governmental agency reliability objectives

• May develop mathematical models to identify units, batches or processes posing excessive failure risks

• As necessary, proposes changes in design or formulation to improve system and/or process reliability

• May determine units and/or batches requiring environmental testing, and specifies minimum number of samples to obtain statistically valid data

• Designs gauges and fixtures to simplify in-process gauging and inspection of products. Conducts gauge design reviews with Tooling Team personnel, purchasing personnel and outside gauging builders.

• Recommends and implements improved gauging methods for in-process and final inspection operations

• Responsible for the creation and documentation of standardized, optimized product inspection procedures

• Resolves technical production problems on assigned product lines involving gauging and inspection procedures working with shop employees and other team personnel

• Conducts technical quality reviews of suppliers to support purchasing personnel certifying suppliers

• Makes recommendations and implements acquisitions of upgrades, enhancements and equipment for the company’s quality system

• Expected to lead by example, coach, and mentor other engineers or team members within the Quality function.

• Trains Medtronic employees and supplier personnel in specific product requirements and Quality tools and techniques

• Initiates improvements in current quality systems, process or methods to improve part quality, schedule performance and to reduce manufacturing costs

Must Haves

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field with 7+ years of relevant experience, or master's degree with 5+ years, or PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience.

• Advanced English proficiency, both written and verbal.
• Ability to travel.

Nice to Have

• Medical device industry experience.

• ASQ-CQE Certification.

• GD&T Certification.

• Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or higher certification.

• Experience with Minitab or equivalent statistical/reliability analysis software.

• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST CAREER STREAM: An individual contributor with responsibility in our technical functions to advance existing technology or introduce new technology and therapies. Formulates, delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower level professionals. The majority of time is spent delivering R&D, systems or initiatives related to new technologies or therapies – from design to implementation - while adhering to policies, using specialized knowledge and skills.

Required Knowledge and Experience: Requires a Baccalaureate degree and minimum of 7 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR PhD with 3 years relevant experience.

 

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$132,000.00-$198,000.00

 

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
