Job Description

Our Bosch Research team occupies a critical position between academic research and product development, distinguishing us from many other companies. We engage with academia, incubate ideas, advance them to the prototype stage, and collaborate with development teams in our business units to support product development based on our research outcomes. We are seeking a research scientist with a strong academic background, proven industry experience, and a passion for tackling complex, real-world problems in molecular diagnostics.

Our R&D center is located in Sunnyvale, CA, USA. This is in the heart of Silicon Valley in close proximity to Stanford University and UC Berkeley. The candidate will be a key contributor to our research and development efforts, from conceptualization to the creation of novel technologies. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with industry experience who is eager to make a significant impact in the field of molecular sensors and biotechnology.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, incubate, and translate cutting-edge academic research into functional, scalable proof-of-concept technologies in molecular diagnostics and biosensing.
  • Lead hands-on development and testing of prototype diagnostic systems, integrating microfluidics, electrochemical sensing, soft electronics, and chip-scale nanofabrication.
  • Collaborate closely with internal business units, engineering teams, and external academic partners (e.g., Stanford, UC Berkeley) to transition early-stage research into commercially viable product pipelines.
  • Design and execute advanced experiments for single-molecule detection, assay integration, and sample-to-answer cartridge performance.
  • Protect innovation through patent filings while contributing high-impact scientific publications and technical documentation.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in biosensors and bioelectronics, advising multidisciplinary teams on technical feasibility, risk mitigation, and system architecture.

Qualifications

  • Education: PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Physics, or a related discipline)
  • Industry Experience: 3-5 years of previous industry experience in a relevant biotechnology company. We highly value experience in translating academic ideas into real-world products.
  • Molecular Diagnostics Expertise: Proven experience in building real-world solutions in the biotechnology sector, particularly in single molecule detection and instrumentation for molecular diagnostics.
  • Integrated Systems Experience: Demonstrated experience with integrated molecular diagnostic platforms, such as cartridge design, on-chip sample-prep, and electronics.
  • Soft Electronics: experience with soft electronics for applications in biosensing.
  • Micro/Nanofabrication: experience with chip design and process development for applications in biosensing.
  • Electrochemical Sensing: experience with electrochemical systems and biosensors.
  • Biochemistry: familiarity with the principles of biochemistry.
  • Proven track record of scientific accomplishment/patent filings
  • Soft skills: highly motivated and passionate about developing new technologies and products; strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills, experience working in a multidisciplinary team.
